Physical vs Chemical.
Chemical Property - The ability of a substance to change into another new substance - This type of property can only be observed through experimentation.
Matter has observable properties.
 Matter is classified by its chemical and physical properties.
Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes. Physical Properties Are a substance’s characteristics that can be observed. Qualitative Examples: How something.

Mass, color, volume, and weight are examples of physical properties. A physical property can be observed or measured without changing the substance. Example:

Classification of Matter SN# 12 Physical Properties and Changes

The BIG Idea Matter has physical properties that can be changed by physical and chemical processes

Matter has PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Physical Properties are characteristics of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. What are a few physical properties of matter? Color - Volume Shape - Density Size - Mass Texture

Physical Changes Physical Changes: a change in some physical property that does not result in the object changing into another substance.

Physical Changes Physical Change: NO new substance is formed. These changes are easily reversible or temporary. All States of Matter Changes are physical changes

Physical Changes EXAMPLES Salt dissolving in water Melting, Boiling, Freezing Mixing 2 solids Crushing Breaking Cutting

Classification of Matter SN# 13 Chemical Properties and Changes

Matter has CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Chemical Properties describe how substances can form new substances Can only be observed as a substance changes into something new.

Chemical Changes Chemical Change: occurs when atoms are rearranged to form a new substance with different properties. A NEW substance is formed. These changes are irreversible or permanent.

SIGNS OF A CHEMICAL CHANGE Chemical Changes SIGNS OF A CHEMICAL CHANGE Heat Light Bubbles Odor Smoke

Chemical Changes Flammability: ability to burn Reactivity: how easily a substance combines with another chemically EXAMPLES Digestion Respiration Burning Photosynthesis Decomposition
