Classification of Matter

Matter Matter is anything that has mass and volume.

Pure Substances vs. Mixtures All matter can be divided into two big categories: PURE SUBSTANCES and MIXTURES. Versus

Pure Substances Pure substances are made up of only ONE type of particle Pure substances are in the form of either elements or compounds. Elements are made of one type of atom. Examples are Oxygen, Calcium, Iron, Carbon and Helium

Compounds A compound is made of 2 or more types of atoms chemically bonded. Examples are water (H2O)

Mixtures A mixture is two or more types of particles Mixtures can be divided into 2 big categories: Heterogeneous Mixtures Homogeneous Mixtures

Homogeneous Mixtures- Solutions A mixture of 2 or more things where one substance dissolves in another Kool-Aid is a solution because you cannot see the sugar crystals floating in the water Kool-Aid and tea are examples of solutions

Heterogeneous Mixtures Made up of two or more particles where the different particles are easy to see and separate. An Oreo cookie is a heterogeneous mixture
