College is Expensive “The question of poor kids, education & inequality,”

Essential Questions What is the difference between a scholarship and a loan? What is the difference between a subsidized loan and a nonsubsidized loan? What type of financial aid will a student with exceptional need receive? What is a course number?

Tuition Price paid to receive specific educational training

FAFSA Free application for financial student aid Federal Student Aid, is a part of the U.S. Department of Education, is the largest provider of student financial aid in the nation.

Stafford Loan A federal loan that is either subsidized or unsubsidized Stafford Loans carry a fixed interest rate, and are typically the most affordable type of student loans.

Subsidized Loan Vs. UnSubsidized The government pays the interest on the loan while in you're in school.

Scholarship A grant given to students who meet academic requirements or athletic achievements.

Perkins loan A need-based student loan offered by the U.S department of Education to assist students. A subsidized loan, with the interest being paid by the federal government during the in-school and 9-month grace periods. There are no origination or default fees, and the interest rate is 5%. There is a 10-year repayment period

Pell grant Money given to students by the government to pay for college. Financial aid given to those with exceptional financial need that does not have to be paid back

Interest rate The cost of the loan.

Credit Hours Required time per week to complete a college course Enrollment in 12 credit hours is the minimum to be considered a full-time student. On average, students complete 15 credit hours per semester.

Graduate Vs. Undergraduate A person with a high school diploma working toward a Bachelor's Degree Graduate A person with a Bachelor's Degree working toward a Master's Degree Usually 30 hours of study.

Degrees Associates Degree - Awarded upon completion of a specific program; usually requires two years of full- time study and 60 credits. Can be used to transfer to four year college. (Paralegal, Associates in Nursing or Graphic Design) Bachelor's Degree - Granted upon completion of a specific program; usually requires four years of full- time study and 120 credits. (Mechanical Engineering Technology, Computer Information Technology, Accounting) Master's Degree - Granted upon completion of a specific program; usually requires one to three years and approximately 30-40 credits beyond a bachelor's degree.

Major/Minor Major Minor A group of classes in an academic field that you wish to explore thoroughly and concentrate on the most as a college student. Minor Once you've declared your major, you can also select a second area for a "minor." Think of it as a "mini-major"—fewer classes and requirements, usually chosen in support of your major.

Grades Withdrawal Drop/Add Students may withdraw from courses during a semester, but there are established procedures & timeline for doing so. A withdraw goes on your transcript as a 'W'. Drop/Add Students are generally permitted to add or drop courses from their class schedules during a specific time period. A drop is treated as if you were never in the class. A small fee can be required.
