Global Warming vs Climate Change Global warming references specifically to the increase in the average Earth’s surface temperature. Climate change references many climate characteristics: wind, rainfall, storm frequency, and temperature Global warming is ONE aspect of climate change

Evidence Temperature: Average temp has increased 1.33 degree F. 2005 was hottest recorded Precipitation: Eastern N & S America are experiencing more precipitation. SW N America and Africa are experiencing less. Heavy rainstorms around the world. Sea Level: When water warms, its volume increases. Melting glaciers: Glacier National Park – 1850 – 150 glaciers 2015 – 26 glaciers

Gathering Data Ice: As glaciers and ice sheets form, tiny bubbles of air get trapped inside. Sediment: Ancient sediment preserves pollen, which tells us types of plants that existed (climate determines plant growth). Tree Rings: Width of ring shows growth. Pair of light/dark = 1 yr. Charred ring indicates forest fire (drought)

Causes Greenhouse gases Burning fossil fuels Land use CO2, N2O, and CH4 all on the rise Burning fossil fuels Fossil fuels contribute to the increase Land use Cutting down forests for industrialization/urbanization Plants take in CO2

Non-Renewable Energy On Schoology p165

What is energy? Energy: The ability to do work Necessary to change position, composition, or temperature

Forms of energy Mechanical: associated with motion or position of an object Electrical: associated with electrical charges Thermal: kinetic energy of atoms and molecules, the more energy, the more (faster) the particles move and get hotter Electromagnetic: travels through space in the form of waves

Forms Continued Chemical: Stored in bonds that hold atoms together. When broken, energy is released Nuclear: NOT within the bonds, but inside the force. Forces hold nuclear particles together Conversion: Can be converted or changed. This usually happens during combustion: process in which a fuel burns Efficiency: how much of the energy actually does USEFUL work

How Fossil Fuels Form Fossil fuels are mostly hydrocarbons Organisms die in an area with very little oxygen, such as at the bottom of a deep lake, swamp, or sea. Dead organisms accumulate, and then have sediment fall on top, exerting pressure These remains are eventually converted into natural gas, coal or oil.

Coal Most abundant ¼ of worlds coal is located in N. America Burning coal accounts for ½ electricity in N.A. Mined via strip mining or subsurface mining Advantage: very abundant, not expensive

Oil Middle East holds most of the world’s oil Used in transportation, or used to create petrochemicals (petroleum) for plastics Mined via drilling Primary Extraction – at first, oil comes out of well without help Secondary Extraction – Chemicals are used to dissolve remaining oil to then pump out

Natural Gas Use is growing faster than any other fossil fuel Colorless, odorless, less polluting, releases less CO2, creates large amount of energy, Pipelines used to transport ½ homes in US are heated via natural gas

Consequences Burning fossil fuels releases CO2 Burning coal and oil releases sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides (acid deposition, industrial and photochemical smog) Oil from nonpoint pollution contaminates ground water. Oil spills decimate ecosystems Black lung disease Acid Drainage – sulfide minerals react with O & H2O to create sulfuric acids

Sustainable City On Schoology p167

Sustainable The ability to continue without depleting or destroying the resources that sustain it. How can we build/grow cities while ensuring these cities are sustainable? There are 6 strategies

Strategy 1: City Planning Design cities to maximize their functionality and beauty. This career choice means you advise local governments on development options, transportation needs, public parks, and other matters. Example: A group of city planners proposed the Sunrail in Orlando back in 2007. In 2014 it opened its doors Utilize GIS (geographic information system) to ensure there are no conflicts between projects Example: Power plant isn’t built next to a school

Strategy 2: Zoning Classifying areas for different types of uses. Commercial  shops, offices, theaters, restaurants Residential  housing predominates: single family house, townhomes, apartments Agricultural  farmland/farming Can restrict areas to single-use residential only or zone it for multi-use (residential and commercial) such as apartments and stores on the same street.

Strategy 3: UGB Urban growth boundaries are set up so that surrounding areas are left as rural; growth cannot occur outside the line Advantages: Less investment than urban sprawl Means we are forced to build UP, not OUT

Strategy 4: Mass Transit If planned for and if the population size supports it, mass transportation is cheaper, more energy efficient, and cleaner than roadways Can be difficult and expensive in areas when road systems are already in place Initially people resist the change Example: Sunrail Successful examples: NY’s subway, DC’s metro, Boston’s T-Rail, San Fran’s BART

Strategy 5: Open Space Open space in cities provide greenery, regulate climate, produce oxygen, filter out air pollution, water pollution, and provide habitats Ecological restoration: restore the parks to their native communities Miami – Oyster plant removal Locally – Air Potato Greenways: vegetated open space that connects parks and neighborhoods. Especially effective near waterways, because they act as a buffer between pollution and aquatic life

Strategy 6: Green Building Energy saving features such as motion detectors for lights More windows for natural lighting (skylights) Solar panels Compost bins Rainwater collection system Plants grow on building

Waste Management On Schoology p169

What is waste? Waste is any unwanted material or substance that results from human activity or process. 3 categories: Municipal – nonliquid waste that comes from homes, institutions, or small businesses Industrial – comes from consumer goods, mining, agriculture, or petroleum extraction Hazardous – solid or liquid waste that is toxic, reactive, flammable, or corrosive

Methods of disposal Sanitary Landfill Incineration Waste is buried or piled up Designed to prevent contamination of groundwater and reduce soil/air pollution Incineration Controlled process in which mixed garbage is burned at a very high temperature

Sanitary Landfills Almost 6,000 landfills have been closed since 1988 and some have been converted into recreational parks Liners can be punctured, releasing pollution into groundwater Keeping the landfill dry prevents decomposition of materials that are biodegradable Gas (methane) pumped up from the bottom can be used to create energy

Incinerators Reducing volume doesn’t get rid of the toxins The waste must be transported to a hazardous waste landfill Scrubbers, much like those on factories, remove some toxins from emissions These incinerators can be used to create energy, not profitable

Minimizing Waste Waste Reduction Recycling Composting Bring own cups/bags Donate Reduce packaging Recycling Composting

Hazardous Waste E-waste Organic Compounds Heavy Metals

Disposal Landfills Surface Impoundment Deep Well Injection Must have several solid, watertight liners Located far from aquifer Surface Impoundment Shallow pits lined with plastic and impermeable materials Deep Well Injection Well drilled deep beneath the water table, with waste being injected into it Biodegradable Material that decomposes or breaks down naturally

5 Minute Stop Waste Management Summary 4-5 Sentence Summary I will be able to explain the types of waste. I will be able to explain waste management and ways to make it energy.

Renewable Energy: All Types On Schoology p173, 175

Biomass Energy Biomass is material that makes up living organisms or comes from a living organism Examples: Wood, manure, and grain Fossil fuels also come from living things, but biomass is renewable

Usage Developing nations: 35% of energy Poorest nations: 90% of energy Total world usage: 14% 25% industrialized nations 75% developing nations

Biofuels Ethanol and biodiesel is used to power motor vehicles Ethanol is pure alcohol that is created by fermenting sugars and starches In US mainly created from corn Biodiesel is produced from vegetable oil Cuts down significantly on emissions

Biopower Sawdust, wood scraps, cornstalks, husks and other waste can be burned to create electricity Decomposition of same material can create methane which can be used to power power plants

Costs/Benefits Costs: Benefits: Crops take up land, not efficient, can create indoor pollution, deforestation, and desertification Benefits: Combustion create no net carbon, and worldwide supply

Geothermal Geothermal energy is created below earth's surface as rock is heated Two methods: Geysers create steam which can be harnessed Wells are drilled down towards the heat source

Steps power plant taps into steam steam turns the turbine generator produces electricity steam is condensed into liquid liquid returns to the aquifer

Costs/Benefits Costs: If plant uses heated water quicker than it can be replaced, the region will run out of water. Water from hot springs contains chemicals that can damage equipment. Can trigger earthquakes. Access is limited. Benefits: causes less air pollution and releases much smaller amount of greenhouse gases

Hydropower Energy Hydropower, aka hydro-energy, uses kinetic energy of moving water to move turbines and generate electricity US – 6% Germany – 3.5%

Dams As river water moves through the dam, water spins the turbine Because water is stored in reservoirs, the supply of energy is steady

Natural River Run-of-the-river approach: uses rivers natural flow to spin turbine Does not disturb natural habitats When river is low, little electricity is generated

Costs/Benefits Costs: Benefits: Interrupt natural flow – alter ecosystems Can lead to landslides/erosion Prevents nutrients from running downstream Benefits: Clean source: NO pollution Inexpensive Can control flooding Most useful in areas with lots of rivers Canada, Brazil, Norway, & Venezuela = < 50%

Renewable Energy: All Types On Schoology p173, 175

Solar Energy Two ways to harness solar energy: Passive Active No mechanical or electrical devices Designed to collect, store and distribute heat naturally Like a greenhouse Windows face South & East, shades trap in heat at night Active Uses mechanical or electrical devices Flat-Plate Solar Collector absorbs sunlight to heat a metal plate Fluid is heated from the metal plate and is pumped throughout the house

These forms do NOT generate electricity For this to occur, PV cells or CSP is needed Photovoltaic cells Two plates, one of which has many electrons. Sunlight hits plate, knocking electrons loose towards the other plate Concentrated Solar Energy Mirrors focus sunlight into one location Concentrated energy is used to heat up a fluid which creates steam Steam spins turbine, which powers a generator

Costs/Benefits Costs: Expensive to install Creating panels creates pollution Some areas do not get a lot of sun Benefits: Clean Energy Long Term – Save money Sunlight is limitless

Wind Energy Actually a form of solar energy The unequal heating of air masses causes wind

Modern Wind Turbines Turbine: converts the wind’s kinetic energy into electrical energy Wind spins the blade of the turbine which connects to the gearbox which connects to the generator which creates electricity Towers are taller than a football field Groups of wind turbines are called wind farms

Offshore turbines Wind speeds are 20% higher over water Costs to build are higher but they produce more power so they can be more profitable

Costs/Benefits Costs: Benefits: No control over the wind People often oppose them: visual pollution Birds and bats can be killed Benefits: Clean energy 1 mw turbine can prevent 1500 tons of CO2, 6.5 tons of SO, 3.2 NO & 60 lbs of Hg over one year Highly efficient Start up cost is high but less expensive once running
