What every 1 st Grade student must know and be able to do to be PROMOTED to 2 nd Grade ! Read at a minimum level of 200 ATOS Read fluently (60 wpm) Read Sight Word list 1-10 (212 words) Apply phonics rules to decode words with 90% accuracy Apply Standard English rules to spelling and grammar. Addition and Subtraction Fact Families (1-20)

What every 2 nd Grade student must know and be able to do to be PROMOTED to 3 rd Grade ! Read at a minimum level of 380 ATOS Read fluently (90 wpm) Read Sight Word list 1-14 (312 words) Apply Standard English rules to spelling and grammar. Addition & Subtraction with 2-digit #s

Writing 1 st and 2 nd Graders need to be able to independently write a complete paragraph on a sustained topic with an… – Opening sentence – At least 3 detailed sentences – Closing sentence In addition to consistently applying correct… Capitalization Punctuation Spacing of letters Grammar

Reading AR is Accelerated Reader – Leveled books – Based on their interests – Comprehension Questions Sight Words are important!!! 100 Words = Begin AR Program Necessary to improve – Vocabulary – Comprehension – Fluency

ATOS An ATOS level on a book indicates how difficult the text is to read. ATOS is measured on 4 components: – Average sentence length – Average word length – Vocabulary grade level – Number of words in the book. Where do they get their ATOS score??

ATOS Benchmark Scores Beginning of the Year 1 st –9 weeks 2 nd – 9 weeks 3 rd – 9 weeks End of the Year 1 st Grade nd Grade rd Grade th Grade th Grade These are minimum scores needed throughout each year as evidence of on grade level achievement.

Summary If your student is not reading at the correct ATOS level, they are not going to be able to handle grade level vocabulary and test vocabulary. If your student is not meeting the minimum expectations for the grade level, they are being considered for retention.
