MLO: Why did Walter Raleigh try and establish a colony in Virginia?

Who was Walter Raleigh? Examine your homework fact file: What makes him significant What is his most impressive feat Has he got any failures or negatives?

What were his key successes? Investigate, organise and raise funds for an English colony in Virginia Promote a voyage and gather support Appoint a governor of Virginia, to rule in his place Develop a blueprint that was to be used for later colonisations

Why colonise Virginia? Political Economic Provided England with a base to attack Spain in the new world – close enough to Florida and the Caribbean To provide the roots of an empire – which later does developed during the 17th and 18th Century England hoped to rival the overseas empire of Spain and undermine its influence in the New World New markets to trade were needed, just relying on Antwerp in the Netherlands was unreliable Offer the Native Americans an alternative to trade and work with. Would end England being dependant on Europe for new goods such as Spice, Tobacco and Sugars into the economy

Examine p93 Look at the major issues Raleigh is faced with. You have 20 experts – divide them up between the 5 groups in order of importance. Challenge – Justify the most difficult of all the problems Raleigh faced Super Challenge – Can you LINK it to other key factors and explain how it is more significant?

By 1585… Raleigh has all the funds he needed He managed to get some investment from Elizabeth and her courtiers. Elizabeth gave gunpowder and a ship worth £400 – in exchange for the land being called ‘Virginia’.
