Dimensioning Demo Let’s Dimension it Should we SIZE it? Note that when this demo was produced the best current practice was to place center marks on Isometrics. We no longer follow that practice, thus no center marks should be applied to Isometrics. Let’s Dimension it Should we SIZE it? Yes, but first do CENTER MARKS R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. These slide were designed as a supplement to the Dimensioning Lecture and were meant to be used in an interactive format where the sequenced views should be "paused" until a class consensus is reached. Approximate demo time is 10 minutes. Slides might also be placed under CARMEN "NEWS" for later student review. P. 1

Dimensioning Demo Now let’s SIZE it Where should we place the WIDTH? Please ignore the Center Marks on the Isometric Views Now let’s SIZE it Where should we place the WIDTH? R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. P. 2

Dimensioning Demo Which WIDTH is best ? RED BLUE Answer: BLUE, since we needed to dimension the solid cylinder in it’s longitudinal view and we don’t dimension to curved surfaces R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. Also placing the length of 75 in the top view places it in it’s more CHARACTERISTIC view and also avoids future clutter P. 3

Dimensioning Demo Which HEIGHT is best ? RED BLUE Answer: BLUE, but not a strong reason …. GROUPING Note that we are planning ahead by leaving room to the left R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. P. 4

Dimensioning Demo Which DEPTH is best ? RED BLUE Something Else Answer: We already have the DEPTH from the Ø50 ! If you added either of these dimensions you would be OVER DIMENSIONING! R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. P. 5

Dimensioning Demo Which is the best way to SIZE the smaller hole? RED BLUE GREEN Answer: RED since arcs use a leader line with the R before the radius dimension R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. Note that GREEN is on the object and not in it’s most CHARACTERISTIC view P. 6

Dimensioning Demo Which is the best way to clarify the size of the material around the cut? Notice the extension of the Center Line in the TOP view and the labeling of that line RED BLUE Something else R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. Answer: RED using the SYMMETRY note. Often a symmetry note greatly simplifies the dimensioning But one could effectively argue that neither are needed since SYMMETRY is obvious from the Center Line in the TOP view. We will leave this “optional” clarifying note. P. 7

Dimensioning Demo Which is the best way to SIZE the larger hole? RED BLUE Answer: BLUE since negative cylinders are always dimensioned in the circular view using a leader line and a Ø before the diameter length R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. P. 8

Dimensioning Demo Which is the best way to SIZE ledge height? RED BLUE Answer: RED since you want to dimension it in it’s CHARACTERISTIC view R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. P. 9

Dimensioning Demo Which is the best way to locate the WIDTH of cut? RED BLUE Answer: BLUE since we want to dimension it in it’s CHARTERISTIC view and we do not dimension to HIDDEN LINES or to CURVED SURFACES R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. P. 10

Dimensioning Demo Anything missing? Look carefully in the FRONT view And finally unclick tangent edges under Edit View-Display Options Anything missing? Look carefully in the FRONT view Mechanical Engineers might want to add a Center Line, but SolidWorks makes this addition very difficult. R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. One method to create the Center Line for the small hole ( in the front view ) is to use the "sketch" option under annotation to draw the long short long line and adjust the thickness using "properties" P. 11

Summary of Dimensioning Guidelines (Applied) R.C.BUSICK - 11/10/09. Please send any comments to busick.10 or 247-6223. P. 12
