Who should host the 2030 Winter Olympic Games?

The IOC are responsible for deciding who will host the Winter Olympics Paired Discussion: They take a number of different factors into account when deciding upon who will host the Winter Olympics What factors might these include? Use the Beijing 2022 candidate video to help Write a list https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6poxzF3l3k

Map of previous winter Olympics hosts. What do you notice about the previous host countries?

3 countries that won medals 3 countries that didn’t win any medals Identify: 3 countries that won medals 3 countries that didn’t win any medals What do you notice about the countries that won medals? Do you think the Winter Olympics are global?

Factors to consider for a host city Is the climate suitable for snow sports? Is the city large enough to handle large numbers of athletes, journalists and tourists. (hotels, transport) Are local people in support? (they will be the ones paying the bill!)

Example: Sochi 2014 Olympics https://story.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Map Tour/index.html?appid=e88045ee56ae4 2d090470d3ca8287543 Create a bubbl.us to identify the costs and benefits of hosting the Olympics. Colour code into social, economic, environmental and political. Are they long or short term? Are they local impacts or more global?

Could a Southern Hemisphere city host the Winter Olympics? Possible host cities for the 2030 Winter Olympics are: Harbin, China Stockholm, Sweden Queenstown, New Zealand Santiago, Chile What do you already know about these cities or countries in which they are located?

Complete the tasks on the assessment task sheet.
