Sample Memoir Hooks

Thud, smash, rip. It was a going away party gone awry Thud, smash, rip. It was a going away party gone awry. I hadn’t meant anything like this to happen; it just did. All of a sudden, I found myself on the ground duking it out with my best friend.

Ping, ping, splash, splash went the rain on my window as I journeyed to my new home for the first time. The neighborhood that I once called home sped by. Each raindrop reminded me of the events leading up to the move, starting with saying goodbye to my old house.

It was the winter of 2003. Lexus, my dog, was pulling me on a sled with her strong legs. I felt the cool winter night air brush against my face. I watched Lexus as she pulled me. Lexus is a very strong dog, I thought, nothing can stop her. But I was dead wrong…

Right as I walked in the door after camp, my mom told me she needed to talk to me. On the way to her room, I thought about whether what she had to tell me would be good or bad. I asked her this very question and she replied, “You’ll see” in a sad tone. Dread rippled through me as I braced myself for what I knew would be bad news. In my wildest dreams, never could I imagine what I was about to hear. It hit me like a brick wall.
