Life is a broken-winged bird TPCASTT EXAMPLE “Dreams” By Langston Hughes Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow.

Continued… T = Title P = Paraphrase T = The poem will be about dreams. Good or Bad? (Probably not nightmares since dreams.) P = Hold on tight to dreams Because if dreams die Life is like an injured bird That cannot fly. (Not what it should be.) Hold on tight to dreams Because when dreams are lost Life is like an empty field Covered with snow. (Desolate and depressed…)

C = Connotation Continued… C = Personification – dreams die, dreams go. Metaphor – life is a broken winged bird, life is a barren field. Imagery – broken-winged bird can’t fly, frozen barren field covered with snow. Repetition – hold fast to dreams.

A = Attitude S = Shifts T = Title Continued… A = The author’s tone is cautionary and somewhat melancholy. S = Two separate stanzas, both ending in periods. 1st – compares to something broken but alive… 2nd – is lifeless, barren… 1st – Ironic; 2nd – Empty; Pointless? T = The title is very indicative of what the poem will be about. The poem is about dreams and the importance of continuing to dream, and the title represents that clearly.

Continued… T = Continuing to dream will lead to a fulfilling life. –or- Lack of dreaming, or not having dreams, makes life empty/meaningless… Plot – the author is telling the audience to keep dreaming because it makes life better and essentially makes life worth living… Subject – Dreams/Life/Value T = Theme
