Weathering and Erosion
Weathering and Erosion Weathering is… When rocks are broken apart and create sediments.
Weathering The process that breaks down rock and other substances at the Earth’s surface Caused by: heat, cold, water, ice, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.
In this weeks lessons we will be investigating what is the nature of weathering and mass movement? By the end of today’s lesson you will be able to describe.
Starter What happens when you leave a glass bottle full of liquid in the freezer for too long? Why? It shatters!

Weathering and Erosion. What is Weathering? Weathering is the chemical and physical processes that break down rock on Earth’s surface.

Title: Weathering and Erosion Welcome Year 8 Sit in your allocated seat, get out your equipment and write the title and date, and begin the starter. Date: 30 November 2018 Title: Weathering and Erosion Starter: 4 MINS In your books: Draw a spider diagram Write everything you currently know about weathering and erosion around the spider diagram.

I will learn: How different factors shape the earth around us. ALL: State the difference between erosion and weathering. I will apply my learning by: MOST: Describe the different types of weathering. Literacy Focus: Reading and writing Use Key words: Weathering, erosion. SOME: Analyse the effect of acid strength on I will evaluate my learning by: Identifying a type of weathering/erosion from its description.

What is weathering? Weathering is the breakdown of rocks by physical and chemical processes. No transport is involved. What is erosion? Erosion is the movement of rocks by wind, moving water and ice (glaciers). These usually contain weathered rock debris. Rocks that fall under gravity also count as erosion. Apply your learning: FULL SENTENCES 4 MINS Using the descriptions above answer the following question: Describe the difference between weathering and erosion? EXTENSION: List as many types of weathering/erosion as you can think of.

Discuss the following questions with the person next to you: What would happen if I left a full bottle of water in the freezer over night? WHY? What would happen if you sprayed a light bulb with cold water? WHY? Why am I asking you these questions?

Different types of weathering Teacher demonstration: Different types of weathering Onion skin weathering

Different types of weathering Teacher demonstration: Different types of weathering Acid Rain

Different types of weathering Root growth

Different types of weathering Freeze Thaw

Describe the different types of weathering Apply your learning Onion skin Acid Rain Root growth Freeze Thaw Describe the different types of weathering Write a short description of each type of weathering Include a diagram EXTENSION: Explain how would the “strength” (pH) of the acid rain would affect the rate of weathering.

Evaluating today’s learning Turn to the back of your books. Listen to my description of a type of weathering. Write the name of the type of erosion. Swap your book with the person next to you, and mark their answers. Write there score out of 4 next to their answers.
