How to interpret the information from a Pedigree Females are indicated with a circle, and males are indicated with a square. = FEMALE = MALE

How to interpret the information from a Pedigree A straight, horizontal line connecting a female and a male indicates that the two are married, and/or produced children.

How to interpret the information from a Pedigree A slash across a shape indicates the person is deceased. (DEAD)

How to interpret the information from a Pedigree A straight, vertical line connected to the vertical line above indicates the children produced by that union.

How to interpret the information from a Pedigree If more than one child is birthed, then the children are placed in BIRTH ORDER along a vertical Line.

How to interpret the information from a Pedigree Shapes may be shaded or clear. Shaded = Has trait/disease Unshaded = Does not Occasionally you may also see a partially shaded shape, or a shape with a dot. This indicates the person is a “Carrier” of the disease (is heterozygous for the trait, but the dominant allele overrides the recessive disease trait.

Cheat Sheet for Pedigrees…. (Write this down if you have not done so previously…) SQUARE—MAN CIRCLE—WOMAN SHADED—DISEASE/TRAIT CLEAR—NO DISEASE/TRAIT Line directly connecting circle/square—Had child (married) Line off of that marriage—Children Each row is a generation

CFU: How many females are represented? How many males? How many people have the disease? How many are males with the disease? How many are females with the disease? How many generations are represented? How many marriages do you see? How many children did the couple in the first generation have?
