The Writing Process Workshop Kristina Yegoryan At times students think that writing a paper a night before can be a miracle

SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes) Objectives of the Workshop: By the end of this workshop, you should be able to do the following: Use at least one method of PREWRITING. Understand the difference between a DRAFT and REVISING. Learn at least one method of REVISING. Learn at least one method of EDITING.

What is the Writing Process? Writing process is a process that can be compared to the process and steps in baking a cake! Writing a Paper VS. Baking a Cake

THE PROCESS OF BAKING A CAKE BRAINSTORMING/ MAKING THE LIST OF INGREDIENTS REALIZING THE LIST/Shopping ORGNIZING DECORATING

THE PROCESS OF WRITING A PAPER 1) PREWRITING 2) DRAFTING 3) REVISING 4) EDITING (PUBLISHING)

Prewriting PREWRITING-BRAINSTORMING IT IS THE STEP THAT WE DO BEFORE WE START WRITING : PRE= BEFORE - WRITING IT IS THE PROCESS OF BRAINSTORMING AND DECIDING

Types of Prewriting Clustering Listing Freewriting Outlining

LISTING Lists are easy to do, and our brains like to make lists, so it relaxes your mind as you do it.

CLUSTERING Clustering is for visual learners. It allows you to “see” the connections easily. It prevents you from writing in complete sentences, reducing the amount of things you need to process as you start your brainstorming.

Eggs Milk Sugar Ingredients Caramel My Favorite Cake Preparation Evaporated Condensed Eggs Milk Sugar Ingredients Caramel Preheat Oven to 325º My Favorite Cake Preparation Process

OUTLINING I. My Favorite Cake A. Ingredients 1. Eggs 2. Sugar 3. Condensed Milk B. Materials 1. Plastic Cups

FREEWRITING In FREEWRITING, you write whatever comes to your mind without worrying about punctuation or grammar. You do write in complete sentences. You can handwrite it or use the computer.

STEP 2: DRAFTING DRAFTING-REALIZING THE LIST Complete sentences. Paragraphs Don’t worry about grammar or punctuation. Remember, it’s a draft NOT a final copy ready to turn in.

STEP 3: REVISING The MOST IMPORTANT step in the Writing Process. This is where your paper goes from being rough to almost complete.

REVISING GLOBAL- looking at the bigger picture Organization of the paper Thesis statement Topic sentences LOCAL -looking at a sentence level Word order Sentence structure and sentence variety

TIPS FOR REVISING REVISING - ORGANIZATION Make sure you have written enough support for your ideas. If not, add more support or specific examples. REREAD the prompt if you have to. Make sure you are following the prompt requirements. Take it to the Writing Center with plenty of time! Show it to one of your peers in your class (someone you trust).

STEP 4: EDITING EDITING - DECORATION OF THE PAPER Looking at the PUNCTUATION and GRAMMAR Make sure there are no FRAGMENTS Check your VERB TENSES Check your MLA FORMAT

Serve the cake and enjoy! Turn in the paper and relax! Step:5 Publishing or Turning in the paper THE PROCESS IS DONE AND THE CAKE IS READ Serve the cake and enjoy! Turn in the paper and relax!

LET’S TRY TO PREWRITE! Choose ONE of the Prewriting strategies (the list, the cluster, the outline, or the free-write) and put down your thoughts and ideas about your 30 day goal. LET’S WATCH THE VIDEO AND READ THE QUESTION IN THE THINK SECTION BEFORE PREWRITING! http://ed.ted.com/on/lAKkdHYG
