May cause ossification disorders. Ossification disorders Condition/Disease

Description of ACAN Symptoms and characteristics ACAN potentially can cause a bone disorder called ossification and what happens is that when you’re a baby most of your body is all cartilage and when you get older it turns into bone but if you have ossification disorders then that means that it cant change for cartilage to bone. It can also cause blood syndrome and this can be detected by blood tests. However this is not the main characteristics of ACAN. You may not find out about this until it happens. For the blood syndrome only happens normally (cant control it). ACAN can only be detected when it happens because there are no ways of detecting your cartilage to bone transformation.

Description of (ACAN) The ACAN gene provides instructions for making the aggrecan protein. Aggrecan is a type of protein known as a proteoglycan, which means it has several sugar molecules attached to it. It is the most abundant proteoglycan in cartilage, a tough, flexible tissue that makes up much of the skeleton during early development. Most cartilage is later converted to bone (a process called ossification), except for the cartilage that continues to cover and protect the ends of bones and is present in the nose, airways, and external ears. The ACAN gene belongs to a family of genes called proteoglycans (proteoglycans). A gene family is a group of genes that share important characteristics. Classifying individual genes into families helps researchers describe how genes are related to each other.

References http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/gene/ACAN supports info on the protein and the job and causes of ACAN. www.homereferencesbiology.com supply's pretty much all info on every chromosome and is the best one to use. http://www.cureangelman.org/what-genetics101.html is where i originally found the gene name of ACAN and has the most info based on chromosome 15. http://ghr.nlm.gov/chromosome/15/shows/genes
