Devil in the White City – end of book wrap-up questions What did you think of the ending of the book? Was it what you expected? Be specific. Did you think this book was worth reading? Defend your answer. Select one quote from section IV or the Epilogue that you think is worth discussing. Be sure to copy the page number. What is one question you still have about this book or one point you’d like to discuss next week?

2008 – Form B (Q3) Michael Ignatieff, Professor of the Practice of Human Rights Policy at Harvard University, made the following observation. “To belong is to understand the tacit codes of the people you live with.” -Blood and Belonging Consider how unspoken rules help to define group identity. Then write a carefully reasoned essay that examines the relationship between unspoken rules and belonging. Use specific examples to develop your position. On a piece of paper: 1. What is your thesis statement? 2. What are the three main points you’ll use to prove your thesis statement?

Last minute test reminders – Multiple Choice If you don’t know the answer but can eliminate one or more options, guess based on what’s left. Preview the passages (quickly!) and complete them in order of how strongly you feel you can get the answers right. Just be careful to keep your answer grid numbered properly. Monitor your time and in the last five minutes, pick a consistent letter to guess if you aren’t going to finish on time. Annotate the passages and “talk to yourself” about the overall meaning of what the writer is trying to accomplish with their writing.

Last minute test reminders – Q3 It doesn’t matter if you defend, challenge, or qualify as long as you do it well. Plan a brief outline during the reading period Use the prompt as a springboard for creating your own argument The grader wants “specific evidence” – don’t over generalize or use hypothetical situations; instead, use: your own experiences, incidents you know about, or what you have read If you write three examples of specific evidence, make sure they illustrate three different points (don’t use three examples to illustrate the same point)

AP Language and Composition – 5/08/14 Bell ringer: Complete practice AP multiple choice passage - #4: pp. 16-19 in the packet Discuss today’s objectives and agenda for the rest of the week: Thursday – AP Multiple choice passage and review AP Q2 that was HW and Q1 Friday – Good luck on the test!!! In class: celebrate???

Use the bathroom; you will be given granola bars and a drink AP Test Overview Section 1: Multiple choice [1 hour / 4 reading passages / 50-55 questions] -annotate the reading passages -use process of elimination Break-10 minutes Use the bathroom; you will be given granola bars and a drink

Section II: Reading time / Essays [15 minute reading period—you can annotate and outline, but you can’t start your essays] Question 1: Synthesis essay -read the entire prompt and decide on your argument BEFORE reading the sources -annotate the sources for info you can use to prove your argument [MARK: FOR / AGAINST / NEUTRAL] -skip sources that don’t make sense to you because you only need to use three

Question 2: Rhetorical analysis -annotate as you read -focus on the 3-4 rhetorical strategies that you feel were the most powerful in getting the author’s message across to his/her audience -pay attention to arrangement and use arrangement as a way of organizing the body of your essay -do not say the author doesn’t know what he/she is talking about, but rather focus on what they did well! -don’t refer to the author by his/her first name. Use both of their names in the intro, and then use just the last name in the rest of your essay Rhetorical triangle Three appeals-Ethos, Logos, Pathos Arrangement Style: diction, syntax, tone, figurative language, irony, etc.

Question 3: Argument essay -annotate as you read -defend, challenge, or qualify! -use examples from: Observation Experience Reading Make sure it’s clear how the examples are relevant to the argument in a large sense and not just to you personally. Don’t use hypothetical examples!
