Grade 11 Vocab Unit 10 Amiable – Trepidation 20 WORDS

Word: Amiable Definition: friendly, pleasant, agreeable Part of Speech: adjective Example Sentence: Gracey’s amiable personality allowed her to get along with most people.

Word: Arbitrary Definition: based on random choice (rather than reason) Part of Speech: adjective Example Sentence: Often times security checks at the airport are arbitrary; officials choose every 100th passenger to search.

Word: Bias Definition: prejudice, unfairness Part of Speech: noun Example Sentence: Mr. Fillipone shows bias to the athletes in his class because he was an athlete in high school.

Word: Circuitous Definition: longer than the most direct way (synonyms: winding, roundabout, indirect) Part of Speech: adjective Example Sentence: Although the circuitous route the cab driver used to take us to the airport took longer, the amazing views of the city made the extra ten minutes worth it.

Conflate Definition: combine into one, integrate, blend Part of Speech: verb Sample Sentence: The two separate streams conflate into one roaring river about two miles into the woods.

Word: Contrived Definition: artificial, fake Part of Speech: adjective Example Sentence: Kate’s apology was contrived. I could tell that she did not really mean it.

Word: Deplete Definition: use up, expend, exhaust Part of Speech: verb Example Sentence: Running in the heat depletes me of energy and hydration.

Word: Eccentric Definition: quirky, slightly irregular Part of Speech: adjective Example Sentence: My eccentric neighbor spends much of the day wandering around in tights and a cape and referring to himself as a superhero.

Word: Labyrinth Definition: a maze Part of Speech: noun Example Sentence: I dread calling the phone company because it means dealing with the labyrinth of customer service representatives that keep transferring me to someone else.

Word: Precept Definition: rule to live by, a maxim Part of Speech: noun Example Sentence: Bobby follows the precept that one should always have a good attitude.

Word: Ramification Definition: consequence Part of Speech: noun Example Sentence: When Scott was disrespectful to his mother, the ramification was being grounded for the weekend.

Word: Reticent Definition: reluctant, restrained Part of Speech: adjective Example Sentence: The student is reticent to speak in class because he is afraid his classmates will judge him.

Word: Squalor Definition: a state of extreme filth due to poverty Part of Speech: noun Example Sentence: When the department of child services arrived at the house, the were appalled by the squalor of the place; it looked like it had not been cleaned in months.

Word: Turpitude Definition: wickedness Part of Speech: noun Example Sentence: The students cheated on the vocabulary quizzes by leaving the definitions in their locker and asking to use the bathroom; they thought the teacher did not know about this act of turpitude.
