Sixth Form Teaching & Learning There is a consensus in research literature that independent learning does not merely involve pupils working alone. The important role teachers can play in enabling and supporting independent learning is stressed. I will outline the strategies/teaching tools I use to encourage independent learning and responsibility in the sixth form.

Key tools to develop independent learning and responsibility. 1. Learning mat 2. Student Research and presentations 3. SOLO TAXONOMY 4. Engagement

Research the following formulas in your text book A2 Economics – The Labour Market Supply and Demand (Chapter 7) Text book / ipad research Using both an example and a diagram explain Adam Smiths economic concept of “Net Advantage” Create a table to show the factors that affect the supply of labour to A firm An individual Learning Outcomes: Be able to explain the different factors that impact on demand for labour (C/B). Can you tick off LO2? Be able to express your understanding of the factors that influence the supply of labour (C/B) Be able to draw and evaluate the impact of the backward bending supply curve on labour demand (A/B) Key Terms Quiz Explain the term derived demand? Draw a diagram to show the MRP and equilibrium quantity of labour? Show a shift in the demand for labour due to derived demand for a specific product? List 4 factors that impact on a firms demand for labour? List 4 factors that determine the elasticity of demand for labour? Record a video or write a song/story to explain the factors that affect the supply of labour to a particular occupation. TASKS Research and explain the backward bending labour supply curve including examples. Evaluate the impact of the backward bending supply curve on the UK labour market? Can you tick off LO1? Complete the table Review - Explain how you have met todays Lesson outcomes to another pupil. Workers Total products Total revenue MRP 1 6 120 2 18 360 3 28 4 32 Research the following formulas in your text book MRP formula Elasticity of demand for labour Elasticity of supply of labour Can you tick off LO3? Each product is sold for £20. How many workers should the firm hire at the following wage rates £70, £90? Explain your answer.

Resources AS Economics 1. Presentation 2. Audio 3. Hand-outs You will become an expert in a specific area of market failure e.g. Merit Goods In groups present your expert knowledge to the class in the form of a presentation, audio clip, hand-out notes and assess students using a feedback tool. Your presentation must include, one from each of the following headings 1. Presentation 2. Audio 3. Hand-outs 4. Feedback Keynote Video clip-ipad Mindmap app Socrative Popplet imovie Evernote Exam question Mindmap Youtube clip E-mail notes T/F activity Poster Google Docs Resources

Learn at your Pace Explain all the key terms. Complete the multi-choice questions Demonstrate your understanding of the diagrams. Grade C Complete exam questions from June 2012 Q5,Q6. Grade C,B,A Design a market failure exam question that requires key terms and a diagram. Grade A, A*

Engagement and Independent research (competition)

Independent research Chapter 7 Chapter 1 and 2 – Callum and Rebecca   Chapter 7 Chapter 1 and 2 – Callum and Rebecca Breakeven Diagram A firms cost curves Long run average cost curve (using short run ATC) The minimum efficiency scale Relationship between total, average and marginal revenue The effect of innovation on a firms costs   Chapter 3 – Ben and Jonathan How much should a firm produce Short run supernormal profits Market response to supernormal profits Long run equilibrium for a firm in perfect competition What happens if the price falls below a firms VC. Chapter 7 – Adam The concept of Net Advantage Elastic and Inelastic supply curves for Labour The backward bending labour supply curve Trade union intervention in the labour market Chapter 4 – James and Stephen A monopolist making supernormal profits A diagram which shows dead weight loss A monopoly and dynamic efficiency First degree price discrimination Second degree price discrimination Third degree price discrimination

Create a news report on……? Up to you, use your imagination. You may decide to have reporters on location, interviews, hand-outs and / or visual aids. Everybody should be involved in the research, planning and delivery. A good report could look something like a mini news special or an advertising campaign. You may decide to use props which could add a nice touch!
