Unit 1: Reaction Kinetics Lesson 10: Catalysts

Jigsaw Activity Time to put the pieces together! Exchange information with other students until you have compiled a list of FIFTEEN different catalysts that play a role in our daily lives (including the ones you have already). 10 min, then 5 min class discussion

Brain Break! 5 min

How Catalysts Affect Reaction Mechanisms: A Case Study WITHOUT catalysis: OCl- + I- → OI- + Cl- Sketch the structure of the activated complex for this reaction. Why might this reaction be rather slow? 5 min

WITH catalysis by water: ClO- + H2O → ClOH + OH- I- + ClOH → IOH + Cl- IOH + OH- → IO- + H2O Sketch the structure of the activated complex for each elementary process in this reaction. Why might this reaction mechanism have a lower activation energy than the uncatalyzed alternative? 15 min

Catalysts Are Always Regenerated! ClO- + H2O → ClOH + OH- I- + ClOH → IOH + Cl- IOH + OH- → IO- + H2O You know that catalysts, by definition, are never “used up” in a reaction. However, note that the catalyst does participate as a reactant, but it is regenerated in a later step. (Intermediates do the opposite.) 5 min
