Assessing Student Learning CUR 528 April Johnson September 21, 2015 Siddeeqah Johnson

Intro In this presentation, the definition of Assessment will be highlighted. The contrast of three types of assessments will be explained. An example and an explanation of how each assessment is used by organizations will be displayed.

What is Assessment? Assessment is defined as the process of documenting knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs ("Wikipedia", 2015). Assessment is the ongoing process of: Establishing clear, measureable expected outcomes of student learning, Establishing clear, measurable expected outcomes of student learning. Ensuring that students have sufficient opportunities to achieve those outcomes. Systematically gathering, analyzing, and interpreting evidence to determine how well student learning matches our expectations. Using the resulting information to understand and improve student learning (Suskie, 2009).

Types and Examples Diagnostic Assessment: Diagnostic assessment can help you identify your students’ current knowledge of a subject, their skill sets and capabilities, and to clarify misconceptions before teaching takes place. Knowing students’ strengths and weaknesses can help you better plan what to teach and how to teach it ("Northern Illinois University", 2015). . Examples: Pretests, self-assessments, discussion board responses.   Formative Assessment: Formative assessment provides feedback and information during the instructional process, while learning is taking place, and while learning is occurring. Formative assessment measures student progress but it can also assess your own progress as an instructor ("Northern Illinois University", 2015). Examples: Observations during in-class activities, homework exercises as review for exams and class discussions SummativeAssessment: Summative assessment takes place after the learning has been completed and provides information and feedback that sums up the teaching and learning process ("Northern Illinois University", 2015). Examples: Examinations, Final examination, term papers, projects, portfolios

Conclusion This presentation captured the definition of Assessments. The contrast of three types of assessments were explained. An example and an explanation of how each assessment is used by organizations were displayed.
