Information about Title I Deer Valley Unified School District has twelve Title I schools. These schools are identified to receive Title I funding based on free and reduced lunch percentages. Schools that have 40% or more of their students receiving free or reduced lunch receive Title I funding. Being a Title I school means receiving federal funding (Title I dollars) to supplement the school’s existing programs. These dollars are used for… Identifying students experiencing academic difficulties and providing timely assistance to help these student’s meet the State’s challenging content standards. Purchasing supplemental staff/programs/materials/supplies Conducting parental Involvement meetings/trainings/activities Recruiting/Hiring/Retaining Highly Qualified Teachers

Requirements At least 40% low income student population. Identify and commit to specific goals and strategies to address those prioritized needs. Implement a comprehensive reform model. Create a comprehensive plan focusing on successful academic achievement for ALL students. Conduct an annual evaluation of the effectiveness of the School-wide Program.

School-wide Programs Purpose • Comprehensive reform strategy designed to upgrade the entire educational program in a Title I school. Goal • Ensures that ALL students –particularly those who are low- achieving –meet and exceed levels of achievement on state academic standards. All Title I schools in Deer Valley are School-wide Programs. This means the Title programs serve all children in a school. All staff, resources, and classes are part of the overall School- wide program. The purpose is to generate high levels of academic achievement in core subject areas for all students, especially those students most in need.

Core Elements of a School-wide Program •Comprehensive Needs Assessment School Profile Areas of Strength Areas of Growth Areas of Improvement –Prioritization of Needs •Comprehensive Schoolwide Plan Comprehensive Schoolwide Reform (CSR) •Budgeting Instructional Student Supplies Administration •Evaluation Did the academic achievement of ALL students improve? Were the goals of the SW Plan achieved? Does the SW plan need to be modified?

Parents, We NEED YOU! Decades of research show that when parents are involved students have: Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates Better school attendance Increased motivation, better self-esteem Lower rates of suspension Decreased use of drugs and alcohol Fewer instances of violent behavior

Parents, We NEED YOU! When schools encourage children to practice reading at home with parents, the children make significant gains in reading achievement compared to those who only practice at school. The most consistent predictors of children’s academic achievement and social adjustment are parent expectations of the child’s academic attainment and satisfaction with their child’s education at school.

Rights of Parents to be Involved Deer Valley schools are required to set aside 1% of Title I funding for parental involvement. All Title I schools emphasize bringing in parents as academic partners and each school receives funding to further this partnership. To learn more about your school’s Title I program and specific parent involvement opportunities please visit school websites. DVUSD has a Title I Parent Engagement Policy and each Title I school has a parent involvement policy and parent/school compact These documents outline the rights of parents to be involved and how parents will receive communication from the school These documents are available on school Title I webpages

Rights of Parents to be Involved Ask for meetings and trainings. Review the results of annual parent involvement effectiveness survey. *Look for the Annual Title 1 survey during P/T conference week Make suggestions for Title I funding. Review the school’s achievement data. Review the parent involvement plan Review and modify the Title I Parent Involvement Plan and Home/School Compact.

Curriculum AZ College and Career Readiness Standards Title I requires research based assessment systems including the use of data based decision, high quality professional development, and the implementation of research-based instructional strategies to ensure the academic achievement of all children. Title I also requires that instruction be provided by highly qualified staff and that strategies are included to increase parental involvement.

Highly Qualified Teachers All DVUSD Title I schools currently have ALL Highly Qualified Teachers All DVUSD Title 1 schools currently have ALL Highly Qualified Paraprofessionals If a teacher does not meet the Highly Qualified NCLB’s requirements, parents will be notified with a letter

Requesting Teacher Qualifications for Your Child’s Teacher You, as Title I Parents, have the right to request the qualifications of your child’s teachers The “Right to Review Qualifications” notice in on school and district websites Please visit your school’s front office if you would like to make this request

Assessments How do we make sure your child is making progress? DIBELS ( K– 3rd) DRA (some schools K-3rd) SRI (3rd-6th) DV School City Formative Assess.~ Math, ELA, SS, Sci AzMERIT AZELLA (K-6th for EL students) Classroom Assessments How will parents receive updates on progress? Progress Reports Report Cards (every 9 weeks) Parent Conferences (Oct. & Feb.) PowerSchools (online all the time) Testing Reports (Statewide assessment)
