Get a Teaching Job EDU 224 | Newberry College

Get a Teaching Job What does a principal want to know about a prospective teacher? What does your resume need to look like? What does a cover letter need to look like? By the end of class you should be able to answer these questions.

Morrison Vitae What would a principal like about Morrison’s vitae? What would a principal not like about Morrison’s vitae? Morrison Vitae

Have students brainstorm material for the main parts of their resumes. Education Certification(s) Awards Work Experience Relevant Activities Have students brainstorm objective. (It needs to be about the school, not about the student.) Brainstorm

What does the principal want to know? Are you flexible and well- certified? Can you fill multiple roles? What will you be able to contribute to the school as a whole? Will you “fit” with the staff and philosophy of the school? Are you a team player? Will you be successful with my school’s students and their parents? Will you make it 5 years? What makes you worth the investment? Have students think about what a principal wants to know. Discuss questions on slide. Tell students that the purpose of a cover letter and resume is to get the interview. Ask – If you were a principal and you needed an English position filled at your school, would you call Sally Sample? Have students pair up and share draft resumes. How do their resumes address the questions? What does the principal want to know?

Your Resume Sections Style Name and contact information Education Certification(s) Awards Work Experience Relevant activities Objective? References? Style Easy to read/Clear Consistent Brief Correct in terms of language Shows good use of computer skills Look at sample resume again and discuss sections and style. How might Sally Sample improve her resume? Give template. Have students work on their drafts and share.

Your Cover Email/Letter Include… Why you are sending the resume. Something relevant about your experience. (A brief story works wonders.) Why that particular school, district, or company. Why that particular position. Your contact information and when you will contact him/her. Style Easy to read/Clear Consistent Brief Correct in terms of language Shows good use of computer skills Look at sample cover letter and discuss sections and style.

You need a job! Give prompt. Pretend you can get an emergency teaching degree right now. You have just heard (through the grapevine) that the principal at a school where you want to teach needs a position filled in your subject area. Create a cover letter and resume to send to that principal. Your goal is to get an interview. Have students draft and discuss.
