Presentation transcript:

DMSP Daytime Visible: 6-3-12 0430Z Snow High Terrain Dust Plumes DMSP OLS daytime visible imagery (0900 local time) with snow in high terrain and most importantly dust plumes in SW Afghanistan. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Marine Meteorology Division Jeremy Solbrig, Mindy Surratt, Kim Richardson, Rich Bankert, Arunas Kuciauskas, Tom Lee, Jeff Hawkins, and John Kent (SAIC)

DMSP Daytime Visible: 6-3-12 1139Z Clouds Snow High Terrain Dust Plumes DMSP OLS daytime visible imagery (1600 local time) illustrating afternoon convective clouds over the higher terrain, snow in highest terrain and most extensive dust plumes in SW Afghanistan viewable due to the lower sun angle and better perspective on the upstream beginnings of the evolving dust event. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Marine Meteorology Division Jeremy Solbrig, Mindy Surratt, Kim Richardson, Rich Bankert, Arunas Kuciauskas, Tom Lee, Jeff Hawkins, and John Kent (SAIC)

Night time Visible Clouds Snow High Terrain City Lights Dust Plumes VIIRS Day Night Band (night time visible) imagery (0130 local time) illustrating clouds, snow in high terrain, city lights and dust plumes in SW Afghanistan due in part to near full moon lunar illumination. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Marine Meteorology Division Jeremy Solbrig, Mindy Surratt, Kim Richardson, Rich Bankert, Arunas Kuciauskas, Tom Lee, Jeff Hawkins, and John Kent (SAIC) VIIRS data set available from the U. of Wisconsin (CIMSS) via NOAA CLASS. Night time Visible

Night time Visible Snow High Terrain City Lights Dust Plumes DMSP OLS night time visible imagery illustrating clouds, snow in high terrain, city lights and a faint hint of dust plumes in SW Afghanistan due in part to near full moon lunar illumination. Note the grainy appearance due to the 6-bit (64 gray shades) OLS digital data set and note this is near the edge of scan. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Marine Meteorology Division Jeremy Solbrig, Mindy Surratt, Kim Richardson, Tom Lee, Rich Bankert, Arunas Kuciauskas, Jeff Hawkins, Steven Miller (CIRA) and John Kent (SAIC) Night time Visible

DMSP OLS Night Visible Snow High Terrain City Lights Dust Plumes Faint Signal DMSP OLS night time visible imagery combined with IR illustrating clouds, snow in high terrain, city lights and a faint hint of dust plumes in SW Afghanistan due in part to near full moon lunar illumination. Note the grainy appearance due to the 6-bit (64 gray shades) OLS digital data set and note this is near the edge of scan. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Marine Meteorology Division Jeremy Solbrig, Mindy Surratt, Kim Richardson, Tom Lee, Rich Bankert, Arunas Kuciauskas, Jeff Hawkins, and John Kent (SAIC)

EUMETSAT RGB (Meteosat-9) Clouds Dust Plumes Faint Signal EUMETSAT RGB product that highlights cloud phases and can discriminate dust in multiple scenarios. Here, broad tongues of purple are related to the dust plumes, but this would be hard to discern within this single image without animation (note this is a Meteosat-9 geostationary data set). Note we are near the edge of scan, thus pixel size is very elongated. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Marine Meteorology Division Jeremy Solbrig, Mindy Surratt, Kim Richardson, Tom Lee, Arunas Kuciauskas, Rich Bankert, Tom Lee, Jeff Hawkins, and John Kent (SAIC)

MSG DEBRA Dust (Met-9): 6-3-12 2100Z Dust Plumes Meteosat-9 NRL DEBRA (Dust Enhancement Background Reduction Algorithm) example at night (local time 0030) using only IR bands. Yellow pixels are related to the dust event. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Marine Meteorology Division Steven Miller (CIRA), Jeremy Solbrig, Mindy Surratt, Kim Richardson, Rich Bankert, Arunas Kuciauskas, Tom Lee, Jeff Hawkins, and John Kent (SAIC)

MODIS (NRL Dust Enhancement): 6-3-12 0845Z Dust Plumes 6-3-12 NASA MODIS imagery using the NRL dust enhancement algorithm to highlight dust plumes in pink. Dry lake beds are highlighted as pink pixels and there is a very faint signal extending to the southeast. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Marine Meteorology Division Steven Miller (CIRA), Jeremy Solbrig, Mindy Surratt, Kim Richardson, Rich Bankert, Arunas Kuciauskas, Tom Lee, Jeff Hawkins, and John Kent (SAIC) MODIS near real-time digital data is made available via NASA LANCE.

MODIS: NRL Dust Enhancement: 6-4-12 0930 Clouds Snow High Terrain Dust Plumes 6-4-12 NASA MODIS daytime imagery using the NRL dust enhancement algorithm to highlight dust plumes in pink on June 4, 2012 at 0930Z (1400 local). Dry lake beds are highlighted as pink pixels and dust plumes are in pink as well extending to the southeast into Pakistan and also capturing the dust event in the top center of the image along the border with Tajikistan. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Marine Meteorology Division Steven Miller (CIRA), Jeremy Solbrig, Mindy Surratt, Kim Richardson, Rich Bankert, Arunas Kuciauskas, Tom Lee, Jeff Hawkins, and John Kent (SAIC) MODIS near real-time digital data is made available via NASA LANCE

VIIRS: NRL Day Dust Enhancement: 6-4-12 0815Z Clouds Snow High Terrain Dust Plumes 6-4-12 VIIRS daytime imagery using NRL’s dust enhancement algorithm, illustrating clouds, snow in high terrain, city lights and dust plumes in SW Afghanistan. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Marine Meteorology Division Steven Miller (CIRA), Jeremy Solbrig, Mindy Surratt, Kim Richardson, Rich Bankert, Arunas Kuciauskas, Tom Lee, Jeff Hawkins, and John Kent (SAIC) VIIRS data set available from the U. of Wisconsin (CIMSS) via NOAA CLASS.
