STEM Education 9:44 AM

STEM vs STEAM or STEMM 9:44 AM

An acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. What is STEM Education An acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics — in a intentional integration and applied approach. 9:44 AM

What is STEM Education Based on curriculum that integrates subjects STEM in elementary grades creates an interest in mathematics and science that provides a foundation for school and beyond STEM education’s integration of hands-on, real-world learning tasks, coupled with academic theory, helps students master difficult concepts of math and science STEM education builds greater capacity in teachers through content specific, demanding and ongoing professional development and training 9:44 AM

“The future of the economy is in STEM…” Why STEM ? “The future of the economy is in STEM…” “That’s where the jobs of tomorrow will be.” Everyone has a stake in improving STEM education. Inspiring all our students to be capable in math and science will help them contribute in an increasingly technology-based economy, and will help India prepare the next generation of STEM professionals – scientists, engineering, architects, and technology professionals – to ensure our competitiveness.”

STEM 1.0 2.0 3.0 4.0 Qualifying the Range of STEM A science class without any of the other STEM components may be seen as STEM. A fully integrated science class with all STEM components may also be seen as STEM.

Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Programs STEM 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 STEM 1.0 Science Technology Engineering Math STEM Disciplines 2.0 Science and Technology Science and Engineering Science and Math Technology and Engineering Technology and Math Engineering and Math STEM Disciplines 3.0 Science, Technology, and Engineering Science, Engineering, and Math Technology, Engineering, and Math Math, Technology, and Science STEM Disciplines 4.0 Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Programs 9:44 AM

Example of STEM 2.0 STEM Disciplines 2.0 Science and Technology Science and Engineering Science and Math Technology and Engineering Technology and Math Engineering and Math Integrating 2 SUBJECTS A science class uses computers to research a problem and develop a presentation A science lesson utilizes and embeds algebraic standards to teach a lesson A math class uses an online graphing program to solve problems and collaborate on solutions. 9:44 AM

Example of STEM 3.0 STEM Disciplines 3.0 Science, Technology, and Engineering Science, Engineering, and Math Technology, Engineering, and Math Math, Technology, and Science Integrating 3 SUBJECTS A science class uses computers to research a problem and develop a presentation. Groups use engineering processes to develop a solution for a problem, modify the solution based on testing and research, and modify the solution. A science lesson utilizes and embeds algebraic standards to teach a lesson, then uses programmable calculators to calculate speed from the slope of the line. 9:44 AM

Example of STEM 4.0 Integrating 4 disciplines STEM Disciplines 4.0 Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Programs Integrating 4 disciplines A Science class examines data using statistics, then uses computers to research a problem and develop a presentation. Groups use engineering processes to develop a solution for a problem, modify the solution based on testing and research, and modify the solution. Example of STEM Education on a chapter Science: Earth and Space – Asteroids, meteorites, and comets. Mathematics: Fractions, Data Handling. Technology: Online researching satellites, developing essential vocabulary, and watching animations. Engineering: Constructing a scaled version of a satellite, comparing models, and modifying models based on project evaluations. 9:44 AM

What are STEM Skills? Analytical skills to research a topic, develop a project with timeline and draw conclusions & results. Science skills to break down a complex scientific system into smaller parts, recognize cause and effect relationships, and defend opinions using facts. Mathematic skills for calculations and measurements. Attention to detail by following technical directions, recording data accurately. Technical skills, troubleshooting, repairing, and utilizing software and modern equipment. Communication and cooperation skills to listen to customer needs or interact with project partners. Teamwork skills for successful project completion. Creativity to solve problems and develop new ideas. Leadership skills to lead projects or help team. Organization skills to keep track of lots of different information. Time management skills to function efficiently.

Global Job Demand Scenario

Need for STEM Education in India ? Projected Percentage Increases in STEM Jobs: 2010-2020

Future for STEM Education in India ? STEM jobs are growing at a fast pace and currently outstripping the number of STEM graduates.  According to the National Science Foundation, 80% of the jobs created in the next decade will require STEM skills. Children develop interest in STEM fields at an average age of 8yrs. The Govt. of India has become sensitive to the Urgent Occupational Demand and through a mission called “Atal Innovation Mission” is funding schools to setup TINKERING Labs. NSF – National Science Foundation The National Science Foundation is a United States government agency that supports fundamental research and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering The Wall Street Journal is a U.S. business-focused, English-language international daily newspaper based in New York City 9:44 AM
