UT – A World Leader in CCS Implementation By: Marty Abrahamson Interactive Classroom Consulting 804-642-9131 marty@einstruction.com

The first commercial CCS, Classtalk, was introduced in 1992 It was first used by a handful of Physics Education Researchers committed to Educational Reform. Although it was difficult to implement, maintain, and very expensive to purchase, the feeling among professors that it was a useful tool was almost unanimous. Student response to the system was overwhelmingly positive.

CCS Growth Chart Student Devices Sold Charles Chiu started with Classtalk in 1996 Art Woods used CPS for the first time in Spring of 2002. He and two professors at Penn State University were the first to test the bookstore model. In the fall of 2002 roughly 3000 thousand students at UT started to use the system.

CCS Adoption Patterns in Higher Education There are currently well over 1000 Colleges and Universities using a CCS technology in this country alone. I am aware of only 8 that have been able involve more than 2500 students for 3 consecutive semesters. …What has put UT in this category?

A Local Support Structure The experience and leadership of the local faculty coordinator. Enthusiasm of instructors and the support of the dean’s office of College of Natural Science and beyond. Their philosophy which says, “with some advanced thinking about the pedagogy, an one hour workshop, and a few hours of practice, anyone can walk in and do it!” A University that values teaching excellence and a culture that promotes the sharing of experience in that area.
