Cell membrane controls flow of materials into and out of the cell. Fluid mosaic model

Passive Transport - No Energy Required Active Transport – Energy Required

Passive transport Diffusion Facilitated Diffusion Osmosis

DIFFUSION Particles move from areas of high concentration to low concentration. (Down concentration gradient) Particles spread evenly. Does NOT require energy.

Facilitated diffusion Charged and large particles can be carried through protein channels. Fast and specific Move from high to low concentration

osmosis Diffusion of WATER through a selectively permeable membrane. When the particles are too big to fit through the membrane, WATER moves across the membrane.
