Graphing in Science.
Warm Up September 12, 2013 This is…well…not the greatest graph ever (to put it nicely). How could you improve this graph?
Inquiry Unit.
Making Graphs from Data. Bar, Line, or Pie? / One of the first things one needs to do when graphing is decide whether to make a bar graph or a line graph.
Topic: Data analysis and Graphing
General Graphing Rules
X- Axis = Independent variable If time is present, it is usually ALWAYS goes on the x-axis (independent variable) If time is present, it is usually ALWAYS.
Using T.A.I.L.S. to construct a perfect graph
Bar Graphs Used for comparing separate groups. Axes X- axis: independent variable (what the scientist controls) Horizontal D – dependent R – responding.

Graphing. Line Graphs  Shows a relationship where the dependent variable changes due to a change in the independent variable  Can have more than one.
Notes: Graphing. Purpose of graphing 1.Allows us to compare data easily 2.Creates a “picture” of the data that shows us tendencies or trends 3.Allows.
Warm Up – Answer in your Journal 1.What is the purpose of a graph? 2. In what kind of job might you have to use graphs? What type of graph is shown below?

TAILS TAILS is an acronym used to help you remember everything you need to create a successful graph.

TAILS Title Includes what the graph is about and both the manipulated and responding variables. Ex. Sleeps Effect on Quiz Scores Hours of Sleep vs. Quiz Scores

TAILS Axis Labels – manipulated variable is always on the x-axis and responding variable is always on the y-axis Remember DRY MIX Hours of Sleep vs. Quiz Scores Quiz Scores Sleep

TAILS Interval Marks Consistent spacing always start at zero! Hours of Sleep vs. Quiz Scores 100 75 Quiz Scores 50 25 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Sleep

TAILS Label Units In ( ) after the axis label, include the proper units (if there are units) Hours of Sleep vs. Quiz Scores 100 75 Quiz Scores (%) 50 25 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Sleep (hours)

TAILS Use the SPACE given: Data covers 80% of the graph area and is accurately placed. NO!!! YES!!!

Interpreting a Graph After drawing the graph, write a data analysis statement: This graph shows that as mv increases, (the responding variable)
