Expansion Leads to Conflict

Bellwork How is abolition like a fruit (you choose the fruit)?

A. In 1820, there are equal numbers of free and slave states in the union Missouri applies to be a slave state North rejects Missouri’s application, South supports it

3. The Missouri Compromise is created Missouri becomes a slave state Maine is a free state 36’30 Compromise line is established (all areas above the line are prohibited from allowing slavery)

B. When new territories are added during the “Manifest Destiny” period, conflicts emerge again

C. In 1850, area of Mexican Cession, California applies to be a free state Conflicts between North and South result in the Compromise of 1850 a. California becomes a free state b. Other territories in the Mexican Cession would use “popular sovereignty” (vote) to determine their slave status b. Fugitive Slave Act is enacted – all escaped slaves must be returned

D. Kansas and Nebraska territories begin to organize for statehood South objects because they are above the 36’30 line Another compromise must be made: Kansas-Nebraska Act

Missouri Compromise line is revoked – all territories would use “popular sovereignty” (vote by the people) to determine the slave or free status North is outraged, South considers the act a huge victory

3. New political parties form Democrats – mainly from South Republicans – mainly from North

E. When Kansas territory has their first territorial election to determine the slave / free status of their territory – problems emerge During the election, people from Missouri go to Kansas and vote illegally in the elections (called “Border Ruffians”) Because of these illegal votes, slavery wins in Kansas Anti-slavery groups in Kansas protest the election and a series of violent clashes occur between pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups – the even is referred to as “Bleeding Kansas”

Thought Question Explain how “manifest destiny” led to increased national division…..use at least 3 specific terms in your explanation (underline them)!!
