People and the Planet- topic 3: Living Spaces 3.1 What are the ingredients of good living spaces? 3.1b) People in different parts of the world are attracted to live in different kinds of living space

good? bad? What do you think of this living space? boring? fun?

An image people have of rural life in developed countries This is the rural idyll An image people have of rural life in developed countries What do you think that image is? Why would some people want to live here? http://www.visitsouthshropshire.co.uk/cleobury-mortimer.htm

The rural Idyll Close communities Peace and quiet Space Less traffic Low crime rates Less pollution/ fresher air Task Write a paragraph or draw a picture to explain the developed world rural idyll

Compare rural idyll to living here Try to identify the ways your life would be different if you lived in a rural as opposed to an urban environment where we currently are. In which ways would it be better? Worse? The same?

Who wants the rural idyll? Watch an introduction to escape to the country to discover reasons for people escaping People who want to retire to the countryside to relieve them from the ‘rat race’ in the urban areas. They want space to walk and garden Young families want fresh, clean air and open space for their children This movement to the rural areas is called COUNTER-URBANISATION

Is the rural Idyll real? The whole idea of this has meant that some rural areas have got too overcrowded So many urban people have bought a second home meaning locals in rural areas can no longer afford to buy a home Some rural villages have got a very small week day population and the population can more than quadruple during the weekend where people with rural second homes work in the city during the week and stay in rural areas at the weekend. Many rural villages have seen facilities close such as pubs and shops as there is not the year round population to keep them open

Meanwhile…some people want to move back to the city This movement back to inner city areas is called Re-urbanisation- ‘moving back to the city’ There are 2 main groups who are ‘re-urbanising’ 60+ recently retired 25-35 young and upwardly mobile What reasons would these groups have for moving back to inner city? Make 2 spider diagrams to show the possible reasons for each group

Young and upwardly mobile Lots of shops nearby Multicultural environment Nightlife options nearby Close to work so no need for car Close to similar people Variety in food and places to eat Many newly refurbished flats Lots of places to visit and leisure facilities Close to good transport links

Recently retired Flats are semi- communal so less isolated Close to friends Got to get to the city!!! Lots of transport nearby makes getting around ok Less chance of garden so little maintenance More activities to entertain Everything is close by so easy to get necessities Closer to health services

Is it all good in an urban space? Identify some of the negatives of urban life in a developed country like the UK High levels of pollution, lack of fresh air Overcrowding and congestion Lack of open space for walks Houses tend to be smaller Things tend to be more expensive

The stresses and strains of changing a living space When people think about moving from one living space to another there are factors that act as ‘strains’ (pull factors) and ‘stresses’ (push factors) These factors can be driven by political, economic and personal circumstances Sort the statements on the following sides into stresses and strains on possible migrants

STRAINS STRESSES Good leisure facilities Nearer to friends and family Too noisy quiet Better transport links High cost of living Transport problems Clean environment Unpleasant climate Low cost of living Good climate High pollution levels Better employment prospects Too far from family and friends Few employment prospects Cheaper and larger houses Too far from leisure services

STRESSES STRAINS

Meanwhile some Britons are leaving the UK behind…. Why do you think some Brits want to move to a country like Spain?

Why Spain? Not all people move when they retire, but some do. We have looked at reasons why some may move back into urban areas, now lets look at why some move abroad. About 900,000 UK pensioners receive their pension money overseas. Brits have retired to Spain since the 1950s, numbers doing so rapidly increased during the 1980s. They choose Spain for a number of reasons;- Task Using page 178 in the textbook state some reasons why Brits retire to Spain.

Why Spain? Summary Spain is especially popular for retirees and young families for the following reasons- It has a much warmer climate than the UK It has modern and efficient health facilities The country has excellent transport links, with government subsidies Lower house prices than in the UK Household bills are lower than in the UK Private and state pensions can be transferred directly into Spanish bank accounts Relatively close to UK, so cheap to fly home There is a large ex-pat community there so Brits are not culturally isolated

The perception of Brits abroad particularly in Spain is that they are trying to live an extended holiday lifestyle Many do not learn Spanish or inter mix with locals Many have said Brits are just trying to recreate Britain in Spain with a little extra sun than usual. More recently with programmes such as ‘a place in the sun’ Brits are moving to rural Spain rather than the traditional coastal locations to take advantage of cheaper prices and more isolated picturesque locations,.

What problems? Watch the video clip and answer the following questions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0Tg0IiCPhA ‘Spain Paradise Lost’ Why did Bruce and Mary move to Cantorio? What do George and Judy enjoy? What happened regarding George and Judy’s and their house? What is rustic land? Why can’t it be built on? What happened to Len and Helens 350,000 villa? How long were they given to empty there home? How has the threat of demolition affected lives of Brits in Spain?

Practice Question Explain 2 reasons why people who move overseas when they retire often come home disappointed? (4 marks)

Practice Question guidelines! Explain 2 reasons why people who move overseas when they retire often come home disappointed? (4 marks) Basic answer 90-1 mark) general statements are made such as ‘things don’t work out’ no reference to specific reasons why they do not work out Good answer (2 marks) clearly identifies one reason, such as il health Excellent answer (3-4 marks) Explains 2 reasons such as ill health and worries about language barrier in healthcare or at schools. Refers to issues of illegal homes)
