Changes to SEN (Special Educational Needs) Sept 2014
Early intervention Life outcomes for children with SEN are disproportionately poor Previously school age children Now pre-birth to 25
SEN? Slow progress, low attainment does not necessarily mean your child has SEN Should not automatically lead to a child being recorded as SEN Equally attainment in line with chronological age should not be assumed as no learning difficulty or disability EAL: not SEN but we will need to establish whether lack of progress is due to limitations in command of English or if it arises from a disability or SEN
EHC plans Statements changing to EHC (Education, Health Care) Plans
School Action and School Action Plus School Action and School Action Plus have gone to be replaced by single category SEN
Teachers vs TAs Teachers are responsible for the progress of ALL children in their class Teaching will be of a high quality that is differentiated and personalised to meet the needs of the majority of children Some children need educational provision that is additional to or different from this Have high ambitions, set stretching targets Track progress towards these goals Keep under review the additional or different provision made for them
Parents have more of a voice Teachers to talk to parents about concerns and interventions that will take place Parents to talk to school about concerns they have We will seek parents advice/ opinions when needed Parents can name an educational institution in the plan They can ask for a personal budget
