2nd Grade Evaluative Thinking Lesson Construction Thinkers Key – Intro for Teachers CCSD Advanced Learning – Talent Development

Construction Mystery Bags Using Thinkers Keys

What will students do? Students will engage in problem solving exercises by using the Construction Thinkers Key Students will choose a Mystery Bag containing a Construction Task Card Students will evaluate the task and materials in the bag, then use the use graphic organizers to See – Identify the problem Plan – Choose a strategy to solve the problem Do – Attack the problem Check - Is the problem solved? Each task is open-ended and allows for a range of solutions or ideas.

Implementing the Lesson Prepare: Print and laminate each 2-sided task card. Prepare each Mystery Bag You may want to make copies of the organizers o the back of each card to provide scaffolding for students. Present: Construction Mystery Bags Mini Lesson Practice: Allow students to work in pairs or individually on each consecutive task. There are no right or wrong answers. These tasks encourage and promote individual, creative and lateral thinking.

Assessment Students will be observed as they engage in the problem solving process to construct the item on the Task Card. Students will use an organizer on the back of the task card to scaffold them through the problem solving process. The teacher will evaluate students as they display their ability to: Identify the problem Choose a strategy to solve the problem Attack the problem Determine if the problem is solved
