NUTRITION Chapter 10 Lesson 1

Calorie = energy received from food What are nutrients? Substances in food that your body needs to function properly, to grow, to repair itself, and to supply energy. Calorie = energy received from food

Why do we eat? PHYSICAL NEED PSYCHOLOGICAL DESIRE Hunger- natural drive that protects us from starvation It’s the most BASIC reason for eating PSYCHOLOGICAL DESIRE Appetite- a desire for food, rather than a need, to eat Appetite is shaped by factors in your environment

5 Main factors that shape our appetite! Family & Culture- the culture you live in(growing up), ethnic background, religion beliefs. Does your family eat at home most of the time? Friends- what you learned to like and dislike, eating at friends house, etc Time and Money- Taste and nutrition top factors with cost and convenience next. Today’s lifestyle we rely on quick and convenient food. (fast food, TV dinner, frozen pizza) Advertising- created to make you aware of certain foods- PERSUASION! Judge carefully! Emotions- stress (eat more or less), just head to the refrigerator just because, popcorn at the movie…

Process by which the body takes in and uses food!! SO WHAT IS NUTRITION Process by which the body takes in and uses food!! We must have food to survive and give us energy to live our lives!
