Leafy Sea dragon By: NO

description Although sea dragons are related, their appearance is very different. They are usually green to yellow in color. The body is covered in protective jointed plates instead of scales and long and sharp spines line its dorsal edge.

Habitat They live among rough and rocky reefs, sand patches, seaweed beds, and seagrass meadows.

Physical characteristics The Leafy Sea Dragon has a small head with long, thin pipe like snout and a tail that is about have of there total length. They have long sharp spines on each bony plate that may be used defensively.

DIET The Leafy Sea Dragon does not have teeth or a stomach; therefore, they eat almost constantly. They eat mysid shrimp, small crustaceans, plankton, and larval fish.

BEHAVIOR These fish move to deeper water during winter when food is scarce. In late winter, they migrate to selected shallow bays.

Fun facts The sea dragons are completely independent when they hatch from their eggs. The young feed on the remaining yolk sac and then graduate to consuming zooplankton.
