Driven out Weekly Highlights Discussion Get into small groups of three or four. Look through the past week’s reading assignment in your copy of Driven Out. Review Pfaelzer’s quotes/quotations, anecdotes, and use of rhetorical devices in which you took note and responded. Choose one of Pfaelzer’s quotes/quotations, anecdotes, or examples of a rhetorical device from last week’s reading assignment and share it with your partner or group members. This should take five minutes. At the end of the five minutes, choose which classmate will share his or her highlights with the rest of the class.

Journal assignment one: read introduction and chapter 1 Due Date: October 17, 2018 Create a DIDLS Journal in which you select and quote 3 to 5 meaningful passages that adequately draw from the beginning, middle, and end of each section assigned for this week. For each passage chosen, complete a DIDLS analysis on it. Use the DIDLS sheet to help you complete your analysis on each passage. Using the information you gleaned from the DIDLS analysis, write a rhetorical analysis paragraph on each passage that you have chosen. You may use the Westshore format or the Mel-Hi format to write your rhetorical analysis paragraphs. Refer to the rubric provided for the grading procedures.

Assessment Due Date: December 12, 2018 Look through your dialectical journals from the past six weeks. Create five questions that you would like to discuss during the Socratic Seminar that will be held on Friday, December 12, 2018. Bring evidence (quotes, quotations, examples, anecdotes) from Cullen’s The American Dream as a springboard for each of your questions. TOPIC: Is Pfaelzer’s analysis correct: Although they faced numerous obstacles, the Chinese Americans were able to strive for the American Dream? This Socratic Seminar will count as a test grade. Worth: 200 points
