At the beginning he is presented as a drunken fool who is spoilt by his rich parents and is therefore a device to represent the injustice of the divide between the rich and the poor in England. However, by the end of the play Priestley presents him, alongside Sheila, as one of the few members of the family with a sense of social responsibility; he is outraged that his father sacked Eva Smith for asking for more money. Further, towards the end of the play we see that he feels evident guilt about getting Eva/ Daisy pregnant and tried to help her. He asks of his father ‘why shouldn’t they try for higher wages?’ this rhetorical question demonstrates that Eric is acting as a mouthpiece for Priestley's socialist views: he believes that everyone has a right to a fairer wage and suggests that there needs to be more equality. The phrase ‘why shouldn’t they?’ effectively highlights his outrage as it sounds like he is demanding more information from his father. This is juxtaposed with Birling’s belief in ‘lower costs and higher prices’. Birling refuses to see the factory workers as people, referring to them only as ‘costs’ while Eric understands that they are people who deserve to be treated fairly. Priestley uses language and structure here to demonstrate that even wealthy people like Eric can have a sense of social responsibility and mocks people like Birling who refuse to demonstrate any compassion for the lower classes.
