Basic Dosage by Body Weight Unit 14

Page 282 Overview In a clinical setting, the body weight used is in kilograms and the recommended doses come in mg/kg, mcg/kg, and mL/kg. Special population drugs orders such as pediatric and geriatric medications are often calculated based on weight. These drug orders will state a medication amount per patient weight for a specific time. Many over-the-counter (OTC) medications for children, such as pain relievers, cold medications, and fever reducers, come in containers that have printed dosing instruction. Manufactures know that parents know the weight of their children in pounds; thus, the printed dosing instructions come in teaspoons per age and pound limits.

Conversion to Kilograms Page 284 Conversion to Kilograms Convert the weight from pounds into kilograms Proportions Method Dimensional Analysis 1 kilogram 2.2 pounds x kilogram pounds given in problem = Round the nearest hundred at this point. Examples – page 285 – practice 1: evens Group Work – page 285 – practice 1: odds pounds given in problem 1 kilogram 2.2 pounds x = _____ kg

Converting Pounds and Ounces Page 285 Converting Pounds and Ounces When a weight includes ounces and pounds use the same method as before but first convert the ounces into pounds. For example: 14 pounds 4 ounces 4 16 1 4 14.25 pounds 14 pounds 4 ounces = 14 = 14 = Examples – page 285-286 – practice 2: evens Group Work – page 285-286 – practice 2: odds

Calculating Dosage Pages 286 – 288 After you calculate the kilograms. The next step is to calculate the dosage by multiplying the dose ordered by the weight in kilograms. This will give you either the daily dosage or the individual dosage it depends on the way the problem is worded. Other dosage [divide (to get the ID) or multiplied (to get the DD)] by how many times administered in a day Examples – page 288-289 – practice 3: evens Group Work – page 288-289 – practice 3: odds
