First Class In-Service Kappelman: Virtual Laboratories for Physical Anthropology, 4/e Note to professor or Thomson Rep: This registration applies to 2008, 2007 and select 2006 titles only. Hello, my name is __________________, your school’s Thomson representative. I thank you and your professor for giving me this time to walk you through the ThomsonNOW registration process. The tips I’m going to outline in the next few minutes will help you access this product (and get the most out of it). ***REP: Please know that this product is not like the other ThomsonNOW products – it is not matched with a textbook. This NOW product consists of LABS – interactive labs – we moved from CD to NOW so that profs could track student progress and assess time spent on labs.

This special edition ThomsonNOW lab product is an easy-to-use online resource that provides you with interactive lab exercises ThomsonNOW slides for Kappelman’s Virtual Labs -- First, we will discuss what ThomsonNOW is and how to use it. Then, we will discuss how to you can get registered to use this tool/resource.

Kappelman: Virtual Laboratories for Physical Anthropology, 4/e Student Advantages: Completing lab assignments helps you to connect/apply the often challenging course content This lab provides you with 24x7 access to visuals such as fossils (so that you can study from your home/dorm) The lab includes video segments, interactive maps, interactive exercises, quizzing, 3-D animations, and additional tools to help you learn about physical anthropology student Advantages: Assessment centered lab Instructor Advantages: Measurement components provide ability to track student progress & outcome – Instructors can see how their students are grasping the concepts and can show the professor if they need to revisit a topic. They can also see how long students are spending on each lab Instructors can assign the pre- and post-tests The Kappelman Virtual Laboratories provide several benefits to profs/students: Provides students with 24x7 access to images such as fossils Hands-on computer component for completing lab assignments at school or at home Encourages Critical thinking and problem-solving Provides professors with a tool to assess student learning and competencies Lab Notebook (see tab) for students to take notes, answer lab questions, and e-mail to prof/print out The NOW version allows professors to shuffle labs around (re-order) to better match their course syllabus as well as shuffle content within labs

Select your Lab

Diagnostic Pre-Test You can begin using ThomsonNOW for Kappelman’s Virtual Labs independently as soon as you log on--no instructor set up is required. ThomsonNOW is easy to use and in three easy steps you’ll be on your way to better test scores. Step 1…The Pre-Test uses diagnostic quiz questions to give you an initial assessment of what you may already know about the concepts presented in the lab

Pre-Test Results When you complete a Pre-Test, you are provided with immediate feedback by question, and your overall score. When you review the complete Pre-Test, you will notice the right column lets you know if you got the answer right or wrong, the correct answer is shown within the question.

Recommended Areas of Study You are then provided with ‘Recommended areas of study’ generated by each student’s incorrect responses to diagnostic pre-tests. Identifying exactly the content areas that each student needs to focus on, ThomsonNOW ensures that you spend your study time where their efforts will make the most difference. From your study plans, students can instantly access: specific textbook pages Video clips that reveal real-life situations from the field Map Exercises to help you think critically and apply important concepts Animated figures from the text that bring critical concepts to life through animation and voiceover narration. For student convenience, a complete eBook is integrated into ThomsonNOW

Activities & Exercises Within each lab there are various types of exercises and activities – such as drag and drop, click to get definitions, interactive maps, primates in ‘motion’, fossil images, etc.

Video Clips ..including video clips Video clips help reinforce concepts and show you field examples you will encounter in the field.

Post-Test Results After completing your Labs, you can take a Post-Test to see how much your mastery of the material has improved. Again you are provide with the correct answers.
