Humanism… A Brief Review Humanists believe in.... Or to expand on that... Humanists believe that humans should work to fulfill their potential. They are concerned with our interests, needs, values and more. Humans!
Humanists’ perspective Human beings can use the power of reason, that is, thinking to find truth for themselves. It is important for a person to have an open, curious, and questioning mind. People can achieve great things through learning. Individuals should be skilled in many different areas. They should develop not just their minds but also their bodies and spirits.
Common Misconceptions… Humanism hates Religion FALSE! Humanism includes Religion. If you wanted to pursue knowledge of religion, then you should! In fact, to develop your talent is a way to serve God since God was the one who had given you those talents.
Humanism only includes the wealthy people. FALSE! It may have started with the wealthy, but as books and resources are more available, the other classes could be educated as well.
Humanism was the only reason that education existed in Europe. FALSE Humanism was the only reason that education existed in Europe. FALSE! Education existed in the Middle Ages. It was simply restricted to certain people like priests or nuns.
Important to note…. Humanism begins with the philosophers and thinkers. They influence the rest of society. They pass on their knowledge through books (of course) but also branch out into universities, speaking at royal courts, acting as traveling celebrities and more. By spreading the access to knowledge, they spread the focus on knowledge and encourage others to pursue. Now they would focus on investigation, research, curiosity, and bringing back the knowledge of the Greek and Roman eras.
