Warm-up: Part I of II What is the path that blood takes through the body? Include the heart chambers it flows into and out of and the types of blood vessels it uses to go to the lungs and to the body and back to the heart.

What does the digestive system do? Part II What does the digestive system do? What is the function of the excretory system? What are the organs of each of these systems?

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM & EXCRETORY SYSTEM CHAPTER 13.4

Digestive system The group of organs that work together to break down foods into substances that your cells can use. The four steps of of the digestive system are: Ingestion, Digestion, Absorption, and Elimination.

The Process of digestion You begin the process of digestion with the first bite of food. Your teeth begin to smash and grind food and it is mixed with saliva (a digestive juice produced by the salivary glands in your mouth). The chemicals in saliva are called enzymes.

The Digestive Process Digestion is defined as the way by which the body breaks down food into smaller pieces that can be absorbed by the blood and sent to each cell in the body. This is how your body gets energy from the food you eat.

The Digestive Process The food you swallow enters the throat or esophagus and travels via contractions down to the stomach (large, hollow organ that temporarily stores the food and releases gastric juices that chemically breaks down food in the body that makes a watery liquid).

The Digestive Process The small intestines is a coiled tube that is 20-35(>2000sq.ft.) feet long and in which 90% of digestion takes place. The small intestines are directly connected to the stomach. Most of the chemical digestion occurs here and absorption into the body begins.

Gallbladder: sac-like organ that stores bile The Digestive Process Organs that aid in digestion include the liver: secretes bile to aid in fat digestion Gallbladder: sac-like organ that stores bile Pancreas: gland that produces pancreatic juices (enzymes that help break down macronutrients)

Excretory System! The group of organs that work together to remove waste are called the Excretory System or Urinary System. The main organs are the kidneys, bladder and colon or large intestines.

The large intestines The large intestines is also called the rectum and is where the waste from the digestion is pushed to have the water removed from the chyme, thus preventing continuous diarrhea.

Kidneys and bladder Kidneys produce urine from waste fluids and the bladder stores this fluid until you are ready to pass it from the body. Your kidneys filter 180 Liters a day or 47 gallons!

The skin removes waste through sweat. Skin and lungs The skin removes waste through sweat. The lungs remove carbon dioxide when we breathe-exhale.

Problems of the Digestive and Excretory Systems Indigestion is your bodies way of saying slow down and eat more healthfully. This is feeling bloated, belching, painful gas, nausea or burning sensation.

Heartburn is what occurs when stomach acids gets into the esophagus. MO problems Heartburn is what occurs when stomach acids gets into the esophagus. Diarrhea is usually caused by contaminated food but may be a sign of colon disease. Ulcers=open sores in the stomach lining

Appendicitis is swelling of the appendix and requires MD care. Mooooo problems Mineralized stone can form in the kidney or gallbladder and often require MD care. Appendicitis is swelling of the appendix and requires MD care. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins at the opening of the anus and may be itchy or painful and sometimes cause bleeding.
