IN YOUR NOTEBOOK, FIND A SPLACE TO KEEP A SET OF JOURNALS: ALWG: CH 1-4 IN YOUR NOTEBOOK, FIND A SPLACE TO KEEP A SET OF JOURNALS: Your 1st entry: 1. What did the old man in Kabati mean when he said, “We must strive to be like the moon”? 2. Is this advice that could apply to you? Why or why not?

ALWG: CH 9-10 On page 70, Saidu says, “How many more times do we have to come to terms with death before we find safety?” He goes on to say, “Every time people come at us with the intention of killing us, I close my eyes and wait for death. Even thought I am still alive, I feel like each time I accept death, part of me dies. Very soon I will completely die and all that will be left is my empty body walking with you. It will be quieter than I am.” The old saying is that that which does not kill us makes us stronger. Are there some things that just kill us slowly instead of building our strength? Explain your answer.

Where do we see this in our society? ALWG: CH 15-20 p-126 “My squad was my family, my gun my provider and protector, and my rule was to kill or be killed. My childhood had gone without my knowing, and it seemed as if my heart had frozen.” Where do we see this in our society? Respond to the question with a paragraph. Make sure that the response is at least 7 sentences each. TODAY: 1. Pop Quiz, 2. Journal, 3. FINISH THE BOOK TUESDAY: 1. JOURNAL PROJECT ASSIGNMENT, EXAM REVIEW WEDNESDAY: EXAM

ALWG: CH 1-13 1. In your life, what is the importance of music? -What role does it play? -Has music ever provided comfort, relief, or an escape? -Why is music so important to so many people? 2. In A Long Way Gone, what is the importance of music? -What role does it play in Ishmael’s life? Respond to each question (#1 & #2) with a separate paragraph. Be reflective of personal experience and of the memoir. Make sure that each response is at least 7 sentences each. TODAY: 1. Journal, 2. Read CH 14-15, 3. HW Video (on website)

ALWG: CH 1-21 Ishmael Beah says that music saved his life. What song has saved your life or has helped you heal? Or, what song expresses an important issue or theme for you? Your song can be old or new, just make sure it is clean (enough)! You can choose a song that contains political or social themes you care about and relate it to one of the issues/themes in A Long Way Gone. Examples: -The importance of family -Healing -Change -Rehabilitation -Redemption -Revenge -Importance of love -New beginnings -Survival at all costs -The consequences of choices we make Your response must be at least 12 sentences and include lyrics from the song and examples from the memoir. TODAY: 1. Journal, 2. Test Prep, 3. Finish S.G. WEDNESDAY: EXAM
