Types of Chemical Reactions, and Energy Essential Question: What happens to chemical bonds during energy exchanges?
What are types of Chemical Reactions? There are 4 types of chemical reactions. Synthesis reactions Decomposition reactions Single replacement reactions Double replacement reactions
What are Synthesis Reactions? Reaction where two or more substances combine to form another substance. Synthesis: to combine or compose.
What is a Decomposition Reaction? Reaction where one substance breaks down, or decomposes, into two or more simpler substances. Decomposition: Breaking down
What is a Single Replacement Reaction? Reactions in which one element replaces another in a compound.
What is a Double Replacement Reaction? Reaction that results in a precipitate, water or gas when a positive ion of one compound swaps with another positive ion of another compound. Precipitate: is the creation of a solid from a solution. (When the reaction occurs in a liquid solution, precipitates are formed.)
Example of Double Replacement Reactions
How does energy partake in chemical reactions? Chemical reactions involve energy changes when molecules are moving around. Exothermic reactions Endothermic reactions
What is an Exothermic Reaction? Reactions in which energy is released in forms of heat. Examples: Burning wood and when fireworks explode.
What is an Endothermic Reaction? Reactions in which heat energy is absorbed. Examples: Ice Packs, Photosynthesis
