5 Characteristics of a Civilization Global I

Opener: What do YOU think defines a “civilization”? What would be 5 characteristics? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Advanced Cities Center of trade for a large area and usually high in population Farmers, merchants, and traders brought goods to market in the cities

Specialized Workers Once the society has a large population, not everyone can do EVERY job at the same time. Most people end up doing one job very well (for example: merchants, government officials, teachers, construction workers, artists, and priests Specialization- the development of skills in a specific kind of work

Complex Institutions Complex institutions include government, religion, and the economy. All of these would have specific rules. High Populations made governments and systems of ruling necessary.

Record Keeping As Government, religion, and the economy became more complex, the people recognized that there was a need to keep records. Most civilizations developed a form of writing while others devised different methods of record keeping

Advanced Technology New tools and techniques invented to aid with farming or to help make other tasks easier. New tools and weapons developed
