MATH Essential Questions What are customary and metric units for measuring length, capacity, and weight/mass, and how are they related?   MATH Essential Questions

Warm Up Sarah planted a garden of 42 flowers. 1/6 of the flowers she planted are roses. How many roses did she plant? How many flowers are not roses?

Think and Write Have you ever used a recipe to make something? Which units of measurement were used in the recipe?

Customary Units of Capacity Capacity is the amount of liquid or substance that a container can hold. The customary units of capacity are, in order from smallest to largest: Cup Pint Quart Gallon

Unit Equivalencies * This silly story can help you remember the units of capacity and their equivalencies. There once was a big kingdom called GALLON. In the Kingdom of GALLON, there were 4 Queen QUARTS. Each Queen Quart had 2 sons, all named Prince PINT. Each Prince PINT had 2 child CUPS to drink from.

Cups and Pints 1 Pint = 2 Cups How many cups are in 2 pints?

Quarts 1 Quart = 2 Pints How many pints are in 2 quarts? Think about it…. If Marissa’s mom wants to give 8 children each a pint of milk. How many quarts should she buy?

Gallons Gallons are the largest unit of capacity. They are used to measure large amounts of liquid. You can buy milk or other drinks in gallon containers. Gasoline (gas) is measured in gallons in the United States. 1 Gallon = 4 Quarts How many quarts are in 4 gallons? If there are 2 pints in a quart, how many pints are there in one gallon?

Which Unit? Which customary unit of capacity would you use to measure the following items? A baby bottle A swimming pool A container of juice A bathroom sink

Choose the best measurement! 2 cups or 2 pints? 35 pints or 35 gallons? 1 pint or 1 quart?
