Definition Of Adjective We often use words to describe a person, place, or thing in order to make our meaning clear. Such describing words are called adjectives

Adjectives tell the kind of noun This is a tall man This is a big ball This is a small ball This is a short man

Read the following words Sweet, Cold, Sour, Hot Now observe how these words describe the things in the sentence : Lemons are very Sour Cold Ice cream is Hot A cup of cocoa is Sweet Pudding is

Lets join the party…... Red, tall, long, short, colourful Today is Rajiv’s Birthday He is wearing a _______shirt. His sister Rita is ______. She is standing on a ______ stool. She is fixing ________ balloons. The balloons have ______ tails. Everybody is waiting for Rajiv to cut the cake Red short tall colourful long Fill in the blanks choosing the words from the box. Red, tall, long, short, colourful

The words sweet, sour, cold, and hot are describing the things honey, lemon, ice-cream, and cocoa respectively. Hence they are called describing words or adjectives.

Here are some more examples of words that describe a person, place, or thing. Big animal Small animal Tall man Short man

Complete the sentences with appropriate adjectives The rose is Red The man is Angry The ball is Round The cake is Sweet

Comparison of Adjectives Adjectives are used to compare persons, things, animals and places. This cake is big That cake is small This girl is happy That girl is sad Lemons are sour But bananas are sweet

. Fill in the blanks with the opposites of the underlined adjectives. This is a young boy But that is an old lady This is a wild animal That is a domestic animal

We can also use adjectives after the noun Read these sentences: Eg. 1)These are sour grapes 2)These grapes are sour => In the first sentence adjective sour is used before the noun grapes. In the second sentence adjective sour is used after the noun. Few more examples for you to read: These are fresh vegetables These vegetables are fresh This is a ferocious animal This animal is ferocious

Degrees of comparison Adjectives have three degrees of comparison: The adjective big is said to be in the positive degree. It is used when no comparison is made. For Eg. This is a big pumpkin The adjective bigger is in the comparative degree. It is used when two persons or things are compared. Eg This is a bigger pumpkin The adjectives biggest is said to be in a superlative degree. It is used when more than two persons or things are compared. Eg. This is the biggest pumpkin.
