Social Justice Behind and Beyond the Bars Criminal Justice Health & Academic Medicine Toolkit Guide

Objectives and Goals 1. Understand the critical issues in Correctional Health 2. Understand the role of policy and the social determinants of health in creating and perpetuating mass incarceration and health inequities among criminal justice populations 3. Understand the role of academic medical centers in the provision of health care, education, and the conduct of research to improve the health and well-being of criminal justice populations

Structure and Process While watching the videos, please jot down thoughts and impressions At the end of each video, volunteers will be asked to share their thoughts and reactions before moving on to the next video After viewing the videos, use the either the “Group Discussion Question Sheet” and/or the list of questions included on slides 4-5 of the PowerPoint presentation.

Group Discussion Questions What is the most important activity your institution could do to better address the health of justice-involved populations? What additional training can your academic medical center provide to equip medical students to be responsive to the needs of this population? How can your institution better partner with your community to respond to the health and health care needs of those involved in the criminal justice system?
