Update on economic and social analyses in the OSPAR area Past, present and future

Main focus last year Socioeconomic analysis of the use of the marine environment Agreement on sectors and indicators we would like to describe Contribution to OSPAR Intermediate Assessment

TABLE 1: The Sectors and socio-economic data   NACE codes Contracting Party Gross Value Added Year Employed persons (FTEs) Development in production value or other relevant data on trends between first and second Initial Assessment Scale: OSPAR area, national, other Comments Data sources Fisheries and aquaculture 03 (03.1 fisheries + 03.2 aquaculture) Excluding fish processing industry A B C D Shipping (or maritime transport) 05.1 Sea and coastal passenger water transport 05.2 Sea and coastal freight water transport Excluding inland transport Ports 30.1 Manufacturing (building ships and boats) 46.7 Wholesale Trade (other specialized wholesale) 42 Construction (civil engineering; construction of buildings excluded) 52.1 Transportation and storage (Warehousing for transportation) Oil and Gas 06 Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas (06.1 Extraction of crude petroleum + 06.2 Extraction of natural gas) Excluding processing industry Off-shore Wind Energy No NACE code: Use own publication(s) What we came up with is this table. But I guess people in the back may not be able to read this… Eventuele voettekst

TABLE 1: The Sectors and socio-economic data   NACE codes Contracting Party Gross Value Added Year Employed persons (FTEs) Development in production value or other relevant data on trends between first and second Initial Assessment Scale: OSPAR area, national, other Comments Data sources Fisheries and aquaculture 03 (03.1 fisheries + 03.2 aquaculture) Excluding fish processing industry A B C D Shipping (or maritime transport) 05.1 Sea and coastal passenger water transport 05.2 Sea and coastal freight water transport Excluding inland transport Ports 30.1 Manufacturing (building ships and boats) 46.7 Wholesale Trade (other specialized wholesale) 42 Construction (civil engineering; construction of buildings excluded) 52.1 Transportation and storage (Warehousing for transportation) Oil and Gas 06 Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas (06.1 Extraction of crude petroleum + 06.2 Extraction of natural gas) Excluding processing industry Off-shore Wind Energy No NACE code: Use own publication(s) … but since countries will only start collecting data in 2017/2018, the table in the Intermediate Assessment will remain empty… Eventuele voettekst

… therefore, we will also present some maps, showing where the economic sectors take place (and have their environmentral pressures). These maps are derived from the OSPAR secretariat, so we will (hopefully) not have discussions on whether data presented in the maps are correct or not. Eventuele voettekst

And what about Ecosystem goods and services? And we would like to have a discussion within OSPAR on what we might want to do with the concept of ecosystem goods and services as a tool to make a closer link between Economic analyses (and data) and ecological impacts/improvements/developments. What do we as economists want to do with this concept? What does OSPAR want? And how can we use the concept of ecosystem goods and services as a ‘baton’ that is handed over between economists and natural scientists and vice versa? And what about Ecosystem goods and services? Eventuele voettekst

Lessons learned from WFD (ESAWADI) UK Nordic countries Netherlands EU, 2013 (MAESWorkingPaper) We included some possible casestudies to get the discussion started. Case studies: Lessons learned from WFD (ESAWADI) UK Nordic countries Netherlands Eventuele voettekst

And now? Chapter is being discussed at various levels in OSPAR Thinking about the future…. Discussions are likely to result in comments/suggestions for the tekst of the chapter. Aim is to finalize the chapter this summer. In the mean time thinking about future work. Eventuele voettekst

Forecasting is difficult; especially the future… We don’t want a situation where neighbouring countries have different ideas about future economic developments without knowing that from each other. Informing each other is therefore important. (this applies to countries, but also policy areas/projects, e.g. Blue Growth, MSP, etc). But do we want to do more than that? Forecasting is difficult; especially the future… … so, let’s do it together…: !/? Eventuele voettekst

Discussion on case studies might be first step As stated before, we woul like to have a discussion on whether we could /want to use the concept of ecosystem goods and services to link economic analyses to ecological data/analyses/etc. Eventuele voettekst
