CERT Sizeup (simplified) Facts (Gather facts) Anticipate (Consider facts, guess future) Plan (“Direction before velocity”) Act (Less talking, more doing) Review (Continuously re-evaluate) CERT Basic Training

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Facts (Gather the facts of the situation) Events: What has happened, and what is the current situation? People: How many people are affected, and how many can help? Property: What is damaged and how severely? Yourself: Are you in immediate danger? Do you have the training and equipment that you need? CERT Basic Training

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Anticipate (Consider the facts you’ve gathered) Events: What could happen in the near future? (Consider weather) People: How many more people could be affected? How many can help? Property: What more could be damaged? Yourself: Will food and other supplies last? How long will you be able to help? CERT Basic Training

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Plan (Direction before velocity) Establish priorities. Are lives at risk, and can you help? (Life safety=#1 priority) Define objectives. Base your objectives on the answers to the previous steps and aligned with the priorities you established. Make an action plan. The plan must meet your objectives while maintaining priorities and safety. Simple plans verbal, more complex plans written or diagramed. Maps are especially useful. CERT Basic Training

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Act (Less talking, more doing) Communicate the plan to the team. Execute the plan. Document any deviations and status changes so that you can report accurately to first responders. CERT Basic Training

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Review (Continuously) At intervals, evaluate your progress in accomplishing the plan’s objectives. What is working? What is not? What changes should immediately be made to make to stabilize the situation? CERT Basic Training
