Immune Response
Immune System Responsible for protecting the body from disease. 3 lines of defense
1st Line of Defense SKIN! Acts as a barrier to invading pathogens.
2nd Line of Defense Occurs when injured cells release chemicals that increase the blood flow to an invaded region. The blood brings white blood cells that attack the pathogens. Macrophage: a type of white blood cell that engulfs and kills pathogens.
3rd Line of Defense Involves attacking specific pathogens. Macrophages, T Cells, and B Cells attack and kill infected cells.
Active Immunity The body is exposed to a pathogen and produces antigens specific to that pathogen. Person can be exposed accidentally or purposefully by vaccination.
Passive Immunity The antibodies are passed from one individual to another. Usually through pregnancy.
