Learning bulletin KCD Thames Valley What Happened On the 10th October, a dig team traced and marked up their area of work. After the team traced and marked up the service, they proceeded with the initial dig around the meter box The team then struck and damaged a street light cable with a jack hammer at a depth of 100mm. Why did it really happen? Team dug on top of their mark-up and stated they thought the jack hammer wouldn’t hit the service. Safe digging practices were not adhered to. Team used mechanical tool within 500mm of the service to break ground. What can I do differently? Always ensure that you do not dig directly on top of your mark up and follow safe digging practices. Do not use mechanical tools within 500mm of marked up services. Always ensure you check your surrounding work environment to identify any unknown services such as previous scarring, street lights or any other power supplies. LV damaged service
