Public Services Model Casework 2 Other rival companies By Eoin Godfrey
Introduction In this PowerPoint presentation for the Public Services Model Casework; I will look at the ownership and funding of both Netflix and Amazon Prime, who are rival companies to other big companies such as BBC, ITV, Sky, etc. However; unlike BBC and other similar companies, these two companies are not moderated by anyone since they are a streaming service and can show whatever content they wish.
Netflix ownership Netflix is a publicity traded company that is owned by a number of different investment funds, private investors and intuitions, the company was co-owned by it’s two founders when it was founded and only became a publicity owned company in 2002; Reed Hastings became the chief executive officer, president and chairman of the board for the company in 2014.
Netflix Funding The funding for the Netflix company mainly comes from subscriptions that people sign up for in order to watch; they would also get funding to broadcast licensed shows on their platform as well as original content. however, only 2% of their overall budget in 2016. More recently; the company is beginning to focus more on creating their own shows and films, these are known as Netflix originals such as Orange is the New Black and Stranger Things. Overall; the platform has amassed 93.8 million subscribers to their service worldwide, they had 5 million subscribers in 2016 alone within the UK.
Amazon Prime Amazon Prime is a subsidiary of the overall Amazon company, which provides services such as video and audio streaming. The founder of the company is Jeff Bezos, who at the moment; owns at least 16.9% of the companies’ shares while the second largest shareholder of the company is Diego Piacentini; who is the senior vice president of international consumer business.
Amazon prime funding The funding for Amazon Prime comes from a subscription service similar to the process that Netflix uses to receive their funding; this subscription also pays for Amazon Prime Video. Users pay £7.99 a month for the subscription and £96 to use the service for a year.
Interest as a job Role As a job role; I would rather prefer at Netflix than Amazon as they are beginning to create their own films and TV Shows for their service. I would like to have a role of scriptwriter and have ideas that I could share with others. Unlike Disney; Netflix offers a broader range of TV shows and Films that are aimed at different age groups, this would allow me to create films and TV shows based on my own personal interests while Disney would be restricted to certain content like children’s films and TV Shows. For example, I could create a historical documentary for Netflix while Disney would be unlikely to be interested in this genre.
