Russian Revolution AC Reading Answers We will all share answers equally… like marx would want

1 Summarize the Introduction in one Sentence. Because of the mistreatment by the Russian Romanovs, the people of Russia rose up against their government and created the worlds first communist government.

2. Why was Russia considered a backwards society in Europe? They were unindustrialized. They also practiced serfdom which had long been gone in Europe. Overall, they were far behind in people's rights and technology.

3. Explain the Practice of Serfdom. The surfs would work the land but they could not own the land. The nobility controlled the land and kept some of the profits. The remaining portion of the profits would go to the royal family.

4 Why would the abolition of serfdom influence the Russian Revolution? The surfs were given more power. Thus, they wanted more power after that. It is kind of like to give a mouse a cookie effect.

5 What effects did industrialization have on Russia? It caused significant overcrowding in the cities which led to poor conditions for the people of the cities. Add this: It led to more peasants living closer together thus they were better able to organize.

6 What events led to the Bloody Sunday Massacre of 1905. Many costly wars and harsh growing seasons led to a lack of food and supplies for the peasants. There had also been a population boom in the early 1900’s which further exacerbated the issue.

7 What happened during Bloody Sunday? I covered this in the notes.

8. What did Czar Nicholas II do to appease the people after the 1905 Massacre? He allowed the people to create a “representative Assembly.” However, this group had no real power…. So it was kind of pointless. He dispended this group 3 times.

9 Why was Russia’s involvement in WWI disastrous for the empire? They were no match for Germany’s industrialized fighting machine. They had the numbers on their side but that was it. They had significant food and fuel shortages.

10 Why would the Czarina’s German Ancestry make her unpopular with her subjects? The Czarina was of German ancestry. When the Czar was away fighting the war, Alexandria was in charge of the country. However, she did not do a good job and lost the faith of her people.

He had the “ability” to stop the bleeding of their hemophiliac son Alexi Add this: He used this “power” to manipulate the Czarina into doing what he wanted. 11. What did Grigory Rasputin do to gain favor with the royal family?

12. What was the Results of the February Revolution?: The Czar abdicated the throne Provisional Government was formed. Stayed in the war.

13. What Happened on November 6th and 7th? The Bolsheviks overthrew the Provincial government and created the world’s first communist government.

14. Who did Lenin want to be in control of the Government? What social class was the previous provisional government made of? He wanted the country to be led by ruled directly by councils of soldiers, peasants and workers. Previous provincial government was controlled by the rich elite. "Comrade Lenin Cleanses the Earth of Filth" by Viktor Deni. November 1930

15 Who did the Red Army have to defeat before they could take full control? Whites which represented a large group of loosely allied forces, including monarchists, capitalists and supporters of democratic socialism.

16 What social classes were represented by the White Army? Mostly comprised of rich elite and people that wanted capitalism as opposed to communism.

17 What was the name of the country that they formed? Soviet Union
